Can Ukraine Find New Soldiers Without Decimating a Whole Generation?
NY Times ^ | April 11, 2024 | Andrew E. Kramer, Josh Holder and Lauren Leatherby

The roughly one million men who serve in Ukraine’s army are battered and exhausted. Many soldiers have been on combat duty for two years. Tens of thousands have been lost to death or serious injury. New recruits are desperately needed.

But Ukraine is running up against a critical demographic constraint long in the making: It has very few young men.

Healthy men under age 30, the backbone of most militaries, are part of the smallest generation in Ukraine’s modern history. Ukraine must balance the need to counter a relentless Russian offensive by adding more troops against the risk of hollowing out an entire generation.

How about negotiating a peace deal while you still can.

“To decimate” means to reduce by a tenth. I’m sure that has already to Ukraine’s current generation of military-age men.

They don’t care. It’s all about keeping the cash flowing.

I see this word misused so much it now serves as a flag to reflect the quality of the article or statement

Sure enough, yes they can. Unfortunately, most of the criminals in the most corrupt country in the world have not been charged and are on the U.S. payroll. If we could get our masses of criminally corrupt Uke goons on the front lines, the Ukes could last till Election Fortnight.

“April 10 (Reuters) - Allowing Ukrainian convicts to serve in the military came a step closer on Wednesday as lawmakers approved a first reading of a bill designed to help replenish and rotate troops exhausted after two years of war with Russia.“

They already more than decimated a whole generation.

And those who left earlier in the war are not coming back.

And Zelenskyy has already said he will let in African refugees from Western Europe to help "rebuild" after the war.

Whatever lines on the map may or may not be drawn, Ukraine is no more. Even if somehow "Ukraine" "wins".

How about the young in the upper echelon Ukraine families who don’t “fight”...how about those who Ukraine families who have left to live in EU countries? Ukraine is the most corrupt country. The bottom line: who cares?

Hundreds of thousands, not tens of thousands, have been killed or wounded. Lowering the conscription age from 27 to 25 will not solve the problem. Support for the war is declining. Close to 15 million have left the country as refugees.

Paraphrasing traitor John Kerry, “ How do you ask a man to be the last man to die in Ukraine? How do you ask a man to be the last man to die for a mistake?”

I'm going to keep on being a pedant because our dumbed-down culture leaves me with some pet peeves:

OK, you go ahead and change the Overwhelming tide of of word usage (how’s that goin’?)
Educated people will surely agree with your analysis but also recognize that you are tilting at windmills.

Correct. Meanings of words change over time. It’s surprising how many people don’t realize that.

"Correct. Meanings of words change over time."
Several on-line dictionaries that I looked at give the alternative meaning "to drastically reduce."

Zelenski should enlist and go to the front line. That would be a great moral booster.

“Decimate” has two meanings. The first historical meaning is to take out one in ten soldiers and the second (more recent) is to vastly debilitate the enemy by killing a huge number of its soldiers.

It seems to me that the situation for UKR is between those two meanings and that isn’t good.

Indeed. Judging from the writings of grammatically and orthographically challenged posters on Facebook and other social media, I am aware that I am probably fighting for a lost cause.
