Biden parallels? How Carter fared against Reagan in this stage of election cycle
Fox News ^ | 03/14/2024 | Chris Pandolfo

When President Biden and former President Donald Trump face off in an election rematch this November, one man will remain a one-term president.

Trump, a Republican whom Biden unseated in 2020, seeks to return the favor in 2024 as the incumbent Democratic president struggles with lackluster approval ratings reminiscent of infamous one-term president Jimmy Carter. As of February, Biden's job approval rating stood at 38% in a Gallup poll — less than one point above President Carter's record-low Gallup rating of 37.4% after his third year in office.

There is reason to believe that Biden today is in a weaker position than Carter was in 1980, when the Democratic incumbent lost re-election to Republican challenger Ronald Reagan. In March 1980, a Gallup head-to-head poll showed Carter at 58% to Reagan's 33% — but the gap would narrow in the ensuing months, and Reagan ultimately defeated Carter in a 44-state landslide with 50.8% of the popular vote to Carter's 41%.

It's not 1980 anymore. The electorate is world class stupid these days.

In a fraud-free election Trump would wipe FJB off the face of the Earth.

But it won’t be a fraud-free election.

I love the sense of inevitability but the democrats have done a good job in the last elections cycles with a weak hand.

The democrats still control all the big cities where the 2020 election was stolen. why would this not happen again?

It’s not 1980 anymore. The electorate has a big contingent of third world invaders voting these days.

Imho the most important message about 1980—which folks around here keep forgetting because they are stuck on normalcy bias—is that a lot can happen between March and November—and that can radically affect the results of the election.

Sometimes I think the posts around here are busy plotting moves on a chessboard—when in November the chessboard might have burned in a house fire and the new game may have a name that has not even been invented yet.

Reagan was not under attack by lawfare.

“The democrats still control all the big cities where the 2020 election was stolen.”

Exactly, the results screamed ballot dumps and there were sworn depositions from witnesses who saw boxes of ballots being repeatedly fed into the machines. Plus the unmarked trucks delivering boxes to urban voting stations at 2:00 am. The GOP did nothing and have done nothing.

One of the things the GOP had working for them in ‘79 was the religious right was backing Reagan from the pulpit.
I was new to politics then and really knew nothing about “The Great One”.
Once I was informed, I talked my family into voting for him.
Dad had’t voted for decades.
Years later I bought him a USS Ronald Reagan hat.
He almost cried.

Trump could help himself by adopting the warm affability of Reagan. Suburban women would like that. A the same time he could be tough on the issues.

He was attacked for “he will cause WW3” first term and Iran-Contra in his 2nd.
You are correct they hadn’t invented Lawfare yet but people involved in Iran-Contra had their lives destroyed.

In 1980 the US was still 88% white and somewhat intelligent.

CA was 66% white non-hispanic. It's now down to around 40%.

Reagan was a very likeable individual.

Trump brings so much baggage to the table it puts some voters off.

It’s Trump’s to lose.
Let’s hope he doesn’t.
But bear in mind,
It’s also Biden’s to steal.

Carter only had the Iranian hostages and inflation and he wasn’t the proximate cause of the latter.

Biden has (and caused) 10 million illegals, flying illegals all over the country, not vetting illegals for criminal background or major illnesses; higher inflation than Carter; war on fossil energy; high crime; dystopian, unlivable cities; cultural rot including DEI, CRT, etc; ascendancy of marxists throughout government; trannyism; all major universities taken over by marxists; fake news / no real news reporting from MSM; government/tech collusion; jamming EVs down our throats; and lots more.

It’s a million times worse today than it was when Carter was running for re-election.

America was also a majority White Christian nation even back in the 80s. That’s no longer the case

In 1980 there were still a few democrats who thought uncorrupted elections were more important than winning. I doubt you even find a rat voter who believes that now.

In my state—CT—the Democrats have been stealing elections since the days of FDR.

I have written here about how my grandfather gave Democratic politicians suitcases full of cash.

The mass media never caught on—and not one of those Democrats was ever indicted for taking bribes.

“It’s not 1980 anymore. The electorate is world class stupid these days.”

Exactly! Add to that, the Iran hostage crisis that revealed just how feckless Carter was. If something like that were to happen with Biden in charge, today’s media would make it sound like those hostages were just on vacation.

If only...

I’m afraid that Trump is incapable of containing his abrasive self.

I am with you. Biden is also looking at Reagan and how he won reelection. Reagan was originally behind but then the economy started turning around election year and by election day Reagan won in a landslide. As you pointed out 8 months out and a lot can happen.

That said.. the country is more polarized today and both candidates are a known quantity and most have probably already made up their minds. But a BIG swing upward in the economy or stock market or both might pull Bidens numbers up enough to be reelected.
