Lithium-ion batteries used in E-bikes and other electronic mobility devices are now a leading cause of fires in New York City following their popularity surged during the pandemic’s delivery boom, FDNY officials say.

FDNY Chief Fire Marshal Daniel Flynn told The Post that fires related to lithium-ion batteries have gone up nearly nine-fold since the pandemic, with more blazes related to the batteries happening in the last two months than in all of 2019.

“It’s the prevalence of these e-devices on our streets, there’s way more of them now than ever before,” Flynn said.

Chinese batteries? Or that they are very often subjected to extreme temperature shifts or being charged when frozen, too hot, etc.?

If people’s property gets burned by an EV bike or car fire, can the owners sue for damages?

Will the US step in to protect the guilty EV owners from lawsuits?

I would like laws to keep the EVs away from people’s carports, apartments, cars in lots and houses. Like ones now prohibiting the storage of gas, fire accelerants and explosives. These are in apartment leases, too. Just add EVs.

So good anti EV people like me pay higher insurance due to bad people who own EVs.

(Yes, I divide people into good and bad. Controversial.)

My Back Pages

Crimson flames tied through my ears
Rolling high and mighty traps
Pounced with fire on flaming roads
Using ideas as my maps
“We’ll meet on edges, soon,” said I
Proud ‘neath heated brow

Good and bad, I define these terms
Quite clear, no doubt, somehow

Ah, but I was so much older then
I’m younger than that now

While these e-bikes and scooters may be using cheap Lithium batteries made with less quality control that those in EVs making them more susceptible to fires, all lithium batteries pose a serious fire hazard. When lithium batteries catch fire of course they are putting a significant amount hazardous materials into the environment.

Environmentalists seem not to notice the obvious pollution from lithium batteries, nor do they recognize the damage to wildlife posed by wind farms and solar arrays. A Rube Goldberg scheme to collect waste CO2 from corn ethanol plants and ship it under pressure in a pipeline from Iowa to North Dakota for injection deep underground also seems to pass under the environmentalists radar when any other pipelines would draw mass protests and regulatory roadblocks.

It's all on the newcomers, migrants, illegal aliens, (choose your preferred term).

Stolen e-bikes gotta be charged somewhere.

Eventually, they won't be able to ship these devices at all.

Probably most of them. This is a story from about a month ago regarding replacement batteries for Dyson cordless vacuums. Turns out it had nothing to do with Dyson... the replacement batteries were made in China....
