Elon Musk criticizes hormonal birth control

Tesla CEO Elon Musk criticized hormonal birth control and was met with stories from women about their personal experiences on the pill.

"Hormonal birth control makes you fat, doubles risk of depression & triples risk of suicide. This is the clear scientific consensus, but very few people seem to know it," Musk wrote Friday on X, formerly Twitter, citing a 2017 news article from Time about studies on hormonal birth control.

The Time article discussed how an American Journal of Psychiatry study indicated women who take hormonal contraceptives have a three times higher risk of suicide than those who never took hormonal birth control. Another study in the article found that women on hormonal birth control have a 70% higher risk of depression. The article did not mention weight gain.

"I was placed on the pill at just 14 years old for acne. A few months later, I saw my first-ever therapist despite no prior history of depression," Babylon Bee contributor Ashley St. Clair said in response to Musk's post. "In retrospect, after being on birth control for nearly a decade, being placed on the pill for 'acne' was akin to killing a mouse with a rocket launcher."

Tammy Peterson, wife of psychologist Jordan Peterson, said: "I suffered from depression from the hormonal birth control. Elon is absolutely correct."

Others voiced their opposition to Musk's remarks.

Brianna Wu, executive director of the progressive Rebellion PAC, said: "The right wing is coming for your birth control."

He is right, in several ways.

Is the problem that I think contraception is misogynist, or that I think Elon Musk is bonkers? (Both can - but not must - be true at the same time.)

Men love to talk about women and birth control. They love to pass laws about women and think guys who screw around are alpha males but women who screw around are $luts. That’s how it is.

**Are we women supposed to be brood mares until we keel over or be celibate while our husbands seek solace elsewhere?**

My wife and I waited until marriage (she was 21, and I was 24). We recognized the downside of sex without committment: giving up something very special, to someone we might not end up married to; the risk of an unplanned pregnancy; and the possibility of getting an std. On our first date, she made herself clear, saying she would never take the ‘pill’. She saw some health downsides, like higher blood pressure and weight gain She wasn’t particularly religious back then, so that wasn’t a factor.

We were both late bloomers, so I believe that helped us delay the mating urge some. I finished growing (6’2”) at age 19, I still was still only shaving about 1 or 2 times a week. A very skinny 5’7” hs grad, she turned into a real doll around 19. I was seeking the prettiest girl with good morals I could find, but by 23 I put myself in some steamy situations that I had to shut down (a couple that almost reached the point of no return).

Our was the classic wedding night: excited, yet clumsily learning, lol.

She taught me to not expect ‘it’ every night, but the wait was worth it (and still is over 45 years later).

The instant gratification mindset doesn’t build character, just a spoiled brat attitude.

A woman who bears many children is not a brood mare.

**Jacob had 12 sons by four women….**

Jacob was a lesson in not learning what the rules were back then for daughters being given in marriage; working 7 years for Rachel, and then being given first-born Leah.

I think contraceptives are misogynist. There’s nothing wrong with women’s bodies in their natural state of health.

May God Bless You & Amen!

I suspect they play a roll in the increase in gender distorted children, effeminate boys and masculine girls. If you miss a dose you’re supposed to double up and carry on. If you got pregnant that time and continued to take the hormones for another 2 months before you realize you’re pregnant, it can’t be good for the baby.

So what’s with this “brood mare” nonsense?

I agree with you about instant gratification.

I blame the Playboy mentality for a lot....women gave up their natural role to become toys without consequence (abortion). How many women hit 40 something and realize they were just used and now it’s too late?

I just don’t think women should be expected to have unlimited children. Unfortunately - probably because of the political abortion business - IUDs aren’t talked about much.

Says the man with 11 children by three different mothers

What??

What does that have to do with Musk’s disapproval of the pill??

Are you against childbirth?

Are you FOR limiting the number of children born per parent, and, in general?

I just don’t think women should be expected to have unlimited children.

That's a straw man. No pun intended.

Who are these monsters who "expect women to have unlimited children?"

Are you saying women are too dumb to have minds of their own or too weak to resist the monsters who "expect women to have unlimited children?"

As we have already established, there are non-hormonal/non-surgical methods of avoiding pregnancy. Are you saying women are too irresponsible/undisciplined to use them effectively?
