Two people, “tentatively” identified as the pilot and second-in-command, were killed when a small plane crashed Friday afternoon on Interstate 75 near the Florida city of Naples and collided with a vehicle, authorities said – a wreck that came shortly after a pilot reported an emergency to an air traffic controller.

Five people were onboard the Bombardier Challenger 600 when it crashed around 3:15 p.m. ET, the Federal Aviation Administration said.

Plane lost both engines and crash landed on highway. Apparently had 2 passengers, 2 pilots, and a flight attendant. Pilot and copilot were killed.

Passengers were a perhaps wealthy 35-year-old male and a 23-year-old-female.

Bombardier Challenger 600

I am sensitive to implications in media’s headlines. Calling this a “small plane” does not give any true indications of true size or capabilities of this jet aircraft.

“By then it was 63 ft (19 m) long, and 53.3 ft (16.2 m) wide, and capable of a maximum speed of Mach 0.85 and a range of 7,240 km (3,910 nmi). As an executive jet, it had sufficient capacity for 14 passengers.”

From Wikipedia. It can go about as fast as a standard passenger jet. I assume someone with money to burn chartered it for two passengers.

The 23 year old female seems to be a “fitness” / “wellness” coach / personal trainer, possibly based in Oklahoma...

Not to a 35 year old guy with money to burn. She was probably pretty good company to him.

In all fairness, this is ignoring the possibility that the young woman has money to burn and was taking the dude for a ride...

Is it standard to try to land on a highway? A field would be a rougher surface. However, you wouldn’t be risking the lives of the people in the cars, and less chance of crashing into a cement barrier or whatever.

There will probably be youtube videos on this by pilotdebrief, etc.

"Plane lost both engines and crash landed on highway. Apparently had 2 passengers, 2 pilots, and a flight attendant. Pilot and copilot were killed."

That's why they put the cockpit in the front of the plane. Knowing you're going to be the first to get to the scene of the crash is a powerful motivation to keep the shiny side up.

Largely depends on altitude when emergency occurs

Low enough and choices are very limited.

It looked like two guys and a flight attendant running away from the plane.

Regardless, the crew ran it out of fuel, just plain stupidity to die from fuel starvation.

Do we know it ran out of fuel? The crew said both engines died. The trip was about 1,200 miles and the plane’s range is about 4000 miles. Wouldn’t they know if they were running out of fuel?

"...the crew ran it out of fuel, just plain stupidity to die from fuel starvation."

Ground crew fueled it with, say 500 liters instead of 500 gallons. It's happened before.
