Where is the best (and worst) state to retire in 2024? Fascinating study looks not just at health care and taxes but quality of golf courses too
DAILY MAIL ^ | 24 January 2024 | TILLY ARMSTRONG

Florida earned its reputation as the retirement capital of the US..

A fixed income in retirement can go a lot further in some states than others ..

...

To make the most of your retirement savings, you should retire in a state where the cost of living and tax rates are friendly to retirees, if you have the resources to. You should also consider factors like the quality of the state's healthcare system and the abundance of activities that you enjoy.'

Colorado, which ranked second for the best state to retire in 2024, offers similarly taxpayer-friendly conditions, with no estate or inheritance levies on seniors.

Virginia and Delaware, while not offering the lowest living costs, also have low tax burdens for retirees - with no estate or inheritance taxes.

...

Rounding off the top five .. is Wyoming. It too does not have estate or inheritance taxes, and scores highly for overall wellbeing - with one of the lowest crime rates in the country.

On the other end of the spectrum .. Kentucky as the worst place to retire in 2024.

The Bluegrass State was among the worst 10 states for quality of life and access to healthcare - and is among the bottom five when it comes to life expectancy.

It also ranked in the bottom 20 states for affordability. Kentucky does impose an inheritance tax, the rate of which is determined by the size of the inheritance and who is receiving it.

It also has an income tax rate of 4.5 percent.

...

New Jersey is the second-least affordable state for retirees .. only falling behind the notoriously expensive state of New York.

The first you want to look at is whether it’s a 2nd amendment state

Stevenson Wash overlooking the Columbia and the bridge of the Gods. No state income tax in WA. Cross the river and no sales tax in Oregon. 40 minutes from Portland Airport and out of the city far enough to enjoy life. Less rain fall than the places further west near the coast.

I live in Oklahoma (5th worst). High sales taxes and homeowners insurance (tornadoes). But it’s a very RED state. Constitutional carry. Pro life laws. Homes are inexpensive, so it balances out somewhat. Retired here in 2021 to be near my daughter’s family. Very happy.

If you move into Washington, just make sure you don’t bring any (”importation”) of those deadly gun magazines that carry more than 10 rounds.

Your screen name intrigues me. Does NW stand for northwest? We moved from Oregon to Oklahoma. When I see NW, I immediately think Northwest.

I live in Kentucky...plan to retire here. Cost of living is low in west kentucky. The stats about life expectancy don’t apply if you take care of yourself with diet and exercise. Sure there’s a sales tax. Weather though is great...hot summers and warm winters. But you do get some winter for about two weeks and four season are nice. Land is cheap here at least compared to up north.

I was in Olympia with family for a short while when I created this account and thought I might work some more but I hated Washington state libtards and moved here on my own and the rest of the family followed me

If I were an American, I would retire to Utah or nearby portions of AZ, NV, CO, to be close to numerous opportunities for back country enjoyment. Golf in southern Utah is fairly good also if you’re into golf, also mesquite, NV is nice. If you wanted a place without a strong mormon presence, Kanab UT would be recommended. Personally, I don’t find the mormon influence to be a negative, even though I am not open to being converted.

St George UT is a fairly large place (pop. 125,000) but does not seem to have a lot of crime, and small town Utah (or nearby locations) are pretty much crime free, according to local media that I sometimes look at from “up north.” Not that they report “we are crime free” I just don’t see stories about crime very often.

In Canada, BC is by far the preferred province for retirees moving west from the frigid interior. Kelowna, Osoyoos and parts of Vancouver Island, as well as White Rock (near Blaine WA) are locations with a lot of retired people.

Towns near Calgary are also popular especially with those who want to live in a socially conservative area (that is not easily found in BC but like WA there’s a sort of libertarian vibe under the socialist veneer).

Not saying where I live, don’t want to give it all away.

After 30 years working in Hawaii I retired and we sailed away in 2007. We roamed around the Pacific for a few years before we found this charming little island community in Southeast Alaska.

Not for everyone, certainly, but it's perfect for us.

Rather than go on about what's so great about it I will just say this:

The weather sucks
There is no mall
There is no theater
There are twelve churches but only two bars
There are no freeways, only two lane blacktop and dirt roads
Access by boat or airplane only. There is no bridge and no road in or out.
With a population of less than 3000 you can't be anonymous. You WILL be well known whether you like it or not.
EVERYONE is armed, litterally for bear (and wolves).

You would hate it here.

I wonder if Kentucky is such a bad state for retirement if you exclude the Appalachia region (at least as far as amenities and life expectancy goes). Most retirees may have a good life in the rest of the state. And perhaps the same for most states (avoid the parts that don’t have much for retirees but cling to an area that does).

It sure isn’t in Georgia. Yankees, trust me. It’s a crap hole. Do NOT retire here. Stay where you are, where all the social amenities and services you voted for are.

Doesn't WA have revenue agents looking for people skipping out on sales tax by purchasing over in Oregon?

When we retired my criteria was Second Amendment friendly, no motorcycle helmet laws, tax friendly, no or minimal public transit, not Democrat controlled, to name a few. And it had to be west of the Mississippi River.

It’s all about what you personally want, not what other folks think you need.

Adult volunteer activities, theater companies, golf courses and country clubs are the last thing I’d look for.

The fewer the people the better.

I thought the same thing. What does the life expectancy of people there now have to do with people that retire there, or a healthy person that already lives there?

These surveys are almost always biased towards the result desired by the author. Take Kentucky, for example. My wife’s from KY. You can buy land for 1-2K per acre in most areas of the state. A 500K home in Delaware will get you 2000 sq. ft. and 1/2 acre, while in KY it would buy you a 3,000 sq. ft. house with 150 acres. Maryland is the worst state hands down. Everything is taxed, houses/land are expensive, and regulations are burdensome.
