What is is about airline disasters turned miracles, and for that matter, tsunamis, happening around this time of year?

Japan got both in the last two days, but the latter story appears to be truly miraculous:

Take a look at this video and imagine the odds of anyone on it surviving:blockquote>

Turns out they all survived, 367 passengers and crew on the Sapporo-to-Tokyo Japan Airlines flight, evacuated in an orderly manner from flames and smoke like that, and now have their lives to continue living for it.

According to Axios:

All 379 passengers and crew escaped a Japan Airlines jet that became engulfed in flames on a Tokyo runway on Tuesday after colliding with a Japanese Coast Guard aircraft.

...

The big picture: Live footage showed Japan Airlines flight JAL-516 catching fire as it skidded down the tarmac after landing at Tokyo's Haneda Airport, per Reuters. NHK TV reported that all occupants got out safely before the Airbus A350 was overwhelmed,

5 Coasties died. They were in a takeoff position when JAL hit them. One of them was where they weren’t supposed to be. Either a pilot or a controller blew it bad.

The problem with multi-culturalism is that one or more of the cultures will make a sport out of GAMING the system. That’s why Sweden could get away with incredibly generous welfare/unemployment programs for so long...back when they were Swedish.

In other words, if you’re a Swede in Sweden and you ‘game the system’ to wring out benefits, your peers consider you a dick. However, if you’re a Tunisian Immigrant to Sweden you are EXPECTED to game the system and you’re considered a ‘sellout’ if you actually choose to work for a living.

Japan is essentially monolithic and so they’re like Sweden used to be (except with less social benefits), and as long as Japan stays monolithic, they’ll be fine...

Watch the series “Mayday- air disasters” and you will never want to fly again. Most accidents are because someone made a really stupid mistake from airplane design to pilot error. And a few because the air traffic controller messed up.

It is really impressive that the entire plane was evacuated from two exits in less than 90 seconds. The flight crew followed a defined process and the passengers followed instructions. Training and Discipline. I have always marveled at the Japanese capacity to order their society. That is the fruit of this tree.

I’ve only been one other place/plane type where it was regularly loaded and unloaded with passengers in such a short time. It was ‘that other airline’ out of LV......

The Key is keeping passengers from crowding the aisle(s) until their row is next to leave. Same thing on reverse for loading. Back to front - no picking seats.

But this was with people who knew the ‘routine’ and flew like that daily. For an amorphous group like this in Japan says quite a lot about the people and ability to follow instructions.

The costs of a compliant society are creativity and imagination.

Not seeing a miracle here...good for the 379, of course, but 5 people did die.

It appears the Airbus touched down on the cargo plane in a way that only the front landing gear and the engines took damage. Had the cargo plane been just 100 feet further down the runway both planes would have had a full collision. It then would have been a Tenerife like disaster.

That is my take on it. I think the Airbus was still flaring when it hit the Dash 8. The tail height of the Dash 8 is about 25 feet. It likely would have impacted the Airbus cockpit window. Instead, just the nose took the impact. The center of the nose cone is about 13 feet.

I would say that ‘compliant’ is not the right word to use for the Japanese Society. I would say ‘respectful’ is more descriptive. These are the people who’s children don’t know a school janitor because they clean their own classrooms.

Yes, that is very impressive! It’s sad that the Coast Guard crew died, but wonderful that all of those other people survived.
