Opinion: It’s been 50 years since Nixon resigned. Impeachment hasn’t held up well
cnn ^ | 12/21/2023 | Michael Gerhardt

The past 50 years have not been good for presidential impeachment. In 1974, the Constitution worked as it should have when President Richard Nixon resigned on the brink of certain impeachment in the US House of Representatives and conviction in the Senate. With substantial proof of Nixon’s misconduct assembled by the House, Senate and special prosecutor, the public overwhelmingly agreed with removing Nixon from office.

In contrast, Republicans last Wednesday voted to authorize an impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden based on unspecified, undemonstrated misconduct. There is no evidence, much less any established public consensus, that impeachment is warranted or desirable. Instead, this process is transparently and overwhelmingly partisan.

Nixon is basically a choir boy compared to FDR, LBJ, the Clintons, and Obama/Biden when it comes to electoral fraud, identification and intimidation of political opponents, spying on citizens, etc.

It is correct that impeachment has become a JOKE. How many times was Trump impeached? I’ve lost count. ALL for now what have become proven false narratives

The Left and Deep State are willing to grasp at any stratagem, and destroy any institution, in a one-time, short-term attempt for political advantage. The most recent this month is banning Trump from state ballots

It’s all stunningly dishonest. I suppose if you refuse to even look at evidence then there isn’t any. Then there won’t be any ‘public consensus’ either because none of the media reports on it.

That said, the public DOES have an opinion - the Biden’s STINK. There IS evidence; first person testimony, emails, bank records, ...

The audacity to even write this drivel is astonishing. I’d be embarrassed, but if you live in D.C. and are surrounded by the media echo chamber it doesn’t surprise me.

Nixon did nothing by comparison; the goals of the Dems were two-fold - they wanted him out of office in revenge for Alger Hiss and his fellow travelers and they wanted to defeat any chance that the ARVN could withstand the NVA communist army. Bad people, all of them, and one wretched Hillary Clinton, despite having flunked the DC bar exam, was one of the lawyers on the impeachment committee.

Michael Gerhardt apparently thinks that felony tax evasion and selling our government to foreigners is no big deal.

Yep! Tagline says it with every post.

lol for Trump, a one sided partisan impeachment committee, with one sided ‘witnesses’, and the distortion of words on a phone call...yet there was ‘integrity’ in that instance.

These people are just dirt bags.

huh?

In 2016, “Middle Class Joe” was saying he might have to sell his house when his son Beau died. Now he’s worth millions and has 2 expensive homes only a few years later.

I really wonder about someone like this. Does he believe what he wrote? Or did he write it knowing that he was lying from the start, as an exercise? If he really believes it he’s a very very stupid man.

Imagine writing a whole book that is completely wrong and intellectually dishonest. What sort of person would do that? And why?

I remember the article this author wrote in this same topic when Pelosi trumped up impeachmentcharges on Trump on lies and fake news. Oh wait… he said nothing.

And the constitution didn’t “work” because Nixon resigned on threat of impeachment because of a corrupt political system. No “substantial” evidence was ever presented because there was never a trial. Just hearsay and sound bites presented in a biased manner.

The dems weaponized impeachment when they impeached Trump twice for no other reason than he won an election against Hillary Clinton. It used to be an unwritten rule that you didn't twist the constitution to go after political opponents on baseless charges even if you personally hate the person, that's what banana republics do and it always leads to chaos because they'll do it to you when they get back into power. Now that dam has been breached and it's all on the dems who were butthurt that their chosen messiah Hillary didn't win.

Their hatred of Trump has led to their post-presidency weaponizing of the legal system by trotting out a few racist inner city DA's who would indict Trump for breathing. This used to be an unwritten rule also, you didn't go after your political opponents after they left office because eventually you'll be out of office and you don't want it done to you. All that's out the window now, that agreement has been flushed by the dems. They're acting like they believe they'll never lose an election again, they might be right with all the election rigging.

History will show that this was when the republic was lost. Our country only worked when both sides respected the rule of law, that's gone now and we're just becoming another Venezuela.

Nixon was too honest for his own good.

That, and he was stupid enough to tape everything.

What Nixon would have been impeached for is today’s standard political operating procedure.
