The number of Washington, DC, homicides reached 2003’s record high (248) under President Joe Biden’s prosecutor, police said Monday.

The District’s soaring crime impacts local taxpayers and business owners. In recent months, several restaurants closed due to cost and crime. Whole parts of the city are impacted, such as H Street, where many shelves are bare.

Below are six key D.C. crime statistics:

U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia Matthew Graves, who is responsible for prosecuting those D.C. police arrests, prosecuted only 56 percent of those arrested in 2023 Homicide rose 33 percent in 2023 Robbery spiked 67 percent 2023 Motor vehicle theft increased by 97 percent 2023 At least 760 carjackings occurred in the first ten months of this year 65 percent of those arrested for carjacking are juveniles

Well, if Republicans refuse to trim back government, let Joe Biden’s supporters work on the problem.

Imagine if there was no place in metro DC to spend high government salaries.

Not sure why they are blaming the prosecutor here. It is not the prosecutor’s job to stop crime, but rather to bring those responsible to justice. Also need to note that 2023 is not even close to being over, unless this is using something other than a calendar year.

[After finding all of this info, I reread this statement and see that the article noted that his agency only “prosecuted only 56 percent of those arrested in 2023” BTW, there should be a period at the end of that phrase above.]

I have been trying to find some data on this.

This The Marshall Project website has some information on clearance rates.

As Murders Spiked, Police Solved About Half in 2020

https://www.themarshallproject.org/2022/01/12/as-murders-spiked-police-solved-about-half-in-2020

At the bottom, they have a chart of Homicide Clearance Rate, by Law Enforcement Agency showing a large sample of cities. Interesting to note that the three year looks has several cities with a clearance of just one case of 1 to 44 homicides.

Several small jurisdictions actually cleared more cases than committed during the period

This one surprises me.

Camden Police, New Jersey
23 homicides, 23 cleared, 100%

Note: Clearance rate is not prosecution, it is that the case is solved and the police have arrested the person(s) or determined that they are not available for prosecution I.e. probably dead.

For police to “clear” a crime, they usually need to identify and arrest the suspect. But according to more granular data collected by the FBI but reported by fewer agencies, at least 400 murders cleared in 2020 were solved by “exceptional means.” That means police believed they had enough evidence, but were unable to make an arrest. This occurs when the suspect has died, can’t be extradited or if prosecutors refuse to press charges. Critics say police use clearance by exceptional means — sometimes colloquially described as putting “bodies on bodies” — to artificially inflate clearance numbers.

Looking at the original article, I see that this was poorly excerpted. Posters should learn not to just copy and paste stuff.

The original article also has a major error in the first sentence.

The number of Washington, DC, homicides reached 2003’s (sic 2023) record high (248) under President Joe Biden’s prosecutor, police said Monday.

The District’s soaring crime impacts local taxpayers and business owners. In recent months, several restaurants closed due to cost and crime. Whole parts of the city are impacted, such as H Street, where many shelves are bare.

Below are six key D.C. crime statistics:

1. U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia Matthew Graves, who is responsible for prosecuting those D.C. police arrests, prosecuted only 56 percent of those arrested in 2023
2. Homicide rose 33 percent in 2023
3. Robbery spiked 67 percent 2023
4. Motor vehicle theft increased by 97 percent 2023
5. At least 760 carjackings occurred in the first ten months of this year
6. 65 percent of those arrested for carjacking are juveniles

That reads completely different than what is presented at the top of this thread.

Also point one has no relationship with points 2 to 6.

Sad, but the ‘elties’ live in the counties clustered around DC... and those folks have lots of money to protect themselves. Selling out the country rakes in the cash just ask Hunter...
