A turkey strolling on Sheppard Avenue East near Highway 404 in North York is fowling up traffic, say Toronto police.

In a tweet, posted shortly before 3 p.m. on Tuesday, Toronto police said that the bird is “causing traffic issues.”

We regularly get “turkey jams” on our roads in North Idaho. After sitting a few minutes, I’ve had to get out and shoo them off the road. Otherwise we could sit there for an hour or more.

Those Torontoans (Toronters? Toronites? Torontoites?) must lead sheltered lives.

Just hit the frigging bird, and take it home for Thanksgiving dinner.

The proper term (one which anyone outside Canada has no need to know) is “Torontonian”.

As for being sheltered, since it’s founding in the 1790s there is enough forest within the city limits, including most of the downtown core, that the default option with wildlife is to co-exist to the point where I was in my early twenties before discovering that in certain parts of the city, wild deer not only thrive, they breed at a sustainable rate that is adequate for a viable gene pool and low enough for habitat that they can stay in place without any outside intervention in any way.

I am 60 years old now, well-travelled by any layman’s standard (France, Eastern Canada, most American states west of the Mississippi, Bahamas), but I have only lived outside the city once; that was five months in a City 6 1/2 hours north of Toronto that began when I was 17 and ended by the time I was 18.

To sum it up, my ultimate retirement plan is to live within a 3-hour drive from Toronto, enough to satisfy me to work at my own choosing while enjoying all the benefits of both city life and country life well into my mid-90s.

Correction: I’ve visited most American states EAST of the the Mississippi.

“Torontonian”

Thanks. I knew somebody could tell me. That’s a real awkward tongue-twister!

We just did a 1,700 mile loop through Washington State, through the North Cascades Highway, to Vancouver then to Whistler for a couple days. North to Pemberton then east through the mountains to Kamloops and Revelstoke. Stayed in Revelstoke a few days. We were both very surprised to find such world-class skiing in the small town of Revy. From there to the Icefields Parkway and north to Jasper for a few days. We ended by going back down the Icefields Parkway to Lake Louise and Banff. Finally back home (North Idaho) through Radium Hot Springs.

Western Canada is like the Western USA — lots of wide open, sparsely populated spaces. It was very delightful.

My Mom’s family landed in Ontario in the 1860s, homesteaded the Saskatchewan prairie for 20 years, moved to Red Deer, AB for a while and finally settled in Creston, BC where they ran a fruit ranch / farm for 50 years. That was my great grandparents. Lots of family on my Mom’s side still in BC but not so much in SK or AB.

Yep, we see the turkeys on this side of the border (near Trail BC) and they can hold up traffic, usually a truck horn gets them going.

I was surprised to find ten posts and none referencing Justin Trudeau. Now there’s a real turkey.

He was looking for the dead raccoon. (One virtual lollypop for you if you remember that incident.)

I slow down to 5 mph and keep going. They scamper out of the way—I’ve never hit one yet.

Ours are so stupid that they probably wouldn’t move.

A year ago, some kids ran over a favorite goose on the golf course. The resulting brouhaha went on for months!

Of course, they did it intentionally.
