Sen. Bob Menendez (D-NJ) will step aside from his chairmanship of the powerful Senate Foreign Relations Committee after his indictment on bribery charges, Majority Leader Chuck Schumer announced Friday, as New Jersey’s governor called for the long-serving lawmaker’s resignation.
“Bob Menendez has been a dedicated public servant and is always fighting hard for the people of New Jersey. He has a right to due process and a fair trial,” Schumer (D-NY) said in a statement. “Senator Menendez has rightly decided to step down temporarily from his position as Chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee until the matter has been resolved.”
The 69-year-old Menendez came out swinging in his first statement since the indictment was unsealed by Manhattan federal prosecutors, accusing his opponents of conspiring to “dig my political grave.”
“For years, forces behind the scenes have repeatedly attempted to silence my voice and dig my political grave,” said Menendez, who has repped the Garden State in the Senate since 2006.
“Since this investigation was leaked nearly a year ago, there has been an active smear campaign of anonymous sources and innuendos to create an air of impropriety where none exists.”

Democratic Sen. Bob Menendez of New Jersey has been indicted on bribery charges. Federal agents found cash “stuffed into envelopes and hidden in clothing” in his home. This is the second time Menendez has been charged with bribery.

Of what? The school lunch audit committee. No, we learn in the text. He was chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. So why didn't it read:

How many Republicans said anything similar about President Trump? You have to hand it to Schumer. His statement is nearly the PR textbook method to handle this situation. The only thing Schumer could have added was, “Bob is a very good personal friend. I will shocked if he is found guilty.”
Resigning his position as a US Senator should happen tomorrow. Get him out of next weeks news cycle.
How else would a Dem Senator get busted by the feds? And for BRIBERY? Holy smokes. What's next? A member of Congress getting busted for insider trading?

The real question is, who are the Democrats and Murphy trying to install as his replacement? There is no obvious candidate like Booker a few years ago. My guess is either Fullop who is the mayor of Jesey City or he will play identity politics and nominate Teresa Ruiz who is young and the State Senate Majority Leader.
