President Richard Nixon, the 37th president, announced he would be resigning from the office on this day in history, August 8, 1974.
In a speech delivered to the nation from the Oval Office, Nixon said his resignation would go into effect "at noon tomorrow."
On August 9, Gerald Ford would assume the presidency as the nation's 38th president.
Nixon was the first U.S. president to resign from the position. He left the highest office in the land in the face of likely impeachment amid the Watergate scandal, which involved his administration's cover-up of spying activities on the Democratic Party's headquarters during the election.

There is truth in that.
Nothing like Trump.
He was like Trump insofar as the Deep State corruptocrats hated him and created fake scandals in an effort to get him.
I still have a copy of the Washington Post with the huge ‘Nixon Resigns’ headline. It’s been in a closet since new.
Created the epa and Osha , took us off the gold standard, kissed up to Mao, supported gun control. Yes he provided a great service in 1948, but his Presidency advanced liberalism. M. Stanton Evans said that their were 2 Nixon policies that Conservatives disagreed with. His foriegn policy and his domestic policy. I would have voted for Schmidtz I’m 72.
Not to Trump’s extent.
EXACTLY!
Gahagan-Douglas...in the words of Richard Nixon, she was “pink..right down to her under wear”..AHAHAHAH, love it. The Country he took over in Jan 1969 was an absolute sh%$ show...especially the mess in Vietnam. He did an outstanding job...considering.
And they hated him for outing that Commie Alger Hiss.
You have repeatedly claimed that you are 46!
Now you say that you are 72!
So besides being politically uneducated, refusing to accept actual facts, regurgitating other people's words, that are NOT true, but rather a biased opinion, you are a damned LIAR in spades!
And no, I'm not going to look up Schmitz, don't know who that was, and don't care, since he must have been a nonentity, and suggest that you actually find out what the word "CONSERVATIVE" actually meant back then!
And YES, INDEED, all things considered, President Nixon did an outstanding job!
That they absolutely did and went after him tooth and nail, hammer and claw, for 30+ years, whilst he held office AND to this very day.
I was amazed when my wife and I went to the Nixon Library. Long day, very complex.
Next day we went to the Reagan Library. In and out, simple.
The contrast was interesting.
On this day in history, August 8, 1974 The tabloid STAR had a huge headline announcing..
“JEAN DIXON SAYS NIXON WILL NOT RESIGN!”
The resignation of Nixon the same day is the only reason I remember the STAR tabloid.
Note: Ten years later, Dixon’s publicity staff tried to say she HAD predicted the resignation. No she did not! I remember seeing other predictions of hers before saying he would not resign.
Wish I had bought several copies of the STAR tabloid that week. The headline was...”JEAN DIXON SAYS NIXON WILL NOT RESIGN!”
I remember 1980. Carter was so disliked Ted Kennedy put out a feeler about running. I got a free book in the mail about his antics at CHAPPAQUIDDICK.
Then the liberal news media went into panic mode with the rumor Nixon would run again! The Motto was..”TANNED, RESTED, READY!”
Was headed into my junior year at high school and watched it live at my girlfriend’s house in Arcadia, CA. I remember that evening.
"And for those calling him a "RINO"...no, he was not one, and you are judging him through a tainted lens, lack of factual knowledge, as well as with today's standards! THAT IS ABSURD AND WRONG!"
Nixon's only flaw was that he presented himself as too serious. I was 21 and could not have had less interest in politics but it made me sad to see him board the helicopter on that faithful day. He was a good man but never made a warm connection with the people. No, he was not a "RINO". History should record that he was a good president but it won't.
Let me correct an error from my previous post. I was 22, not 21 on that faithful day.
Nixon was a brilliant man. Sadly he almost never is given any credit for anything he said or did. That’s how much he was and still is hated by the left and even some GOPers.
I’ve been to the Reagan Library several times over the years and it seems like there’s been less exhibits in order to make it more immersive, like videos and long transitions between eras. Most folks probably need that kind of flow, but for me, it’s too much style and not enough substance.
I still need to get to see the Nixon Library one day.
