Biden using CPAP machine for sleep apnea, White House admits, after strap lines appear on prez’s face

WASHINGTON — President Biden has been using a CPAP machine to treat sleep apnea, a potentially serious condition in which breathing can stop during sleep, the White House confirmed Wednesday.

Administration officials acknowledged Biden’s condition and use of the device to Bloomberg News after journalists began asking for comment on strap lines visible on the president’s face while he gaggled with reporters on the White House lawn in the morning.

Biden, 80, is the oldest-ever US president and is seeking a second term in next year’s election, despite concerns about his physical and mental fitness for office.

Yeah, I have it, and have slept much better since getting the CPAP machine.

I picked up the sleep lab monitor this morning. Sensors for chest breathing, air flow in the nose and finger sensor of SPO2/pulse. It goes on tonight, return tomorrow. I often wake up multiple times during the night and have to consciously inhale. On some occasions I detect my airway closed. Sleeping on my side avoids the problem, but both shoulders get very sore. Inevitably, I end up on my back with interrupted sleep. The monitor should provide either confirmation or point to another problem.

I tried to reach my best friend from college. He acknowledged having sleep apnea when we were at UCSD. I got a reply from his son. My friend was found dead. Comfortably set in his favorite easy chair. Best guess from the coroner was sleep apnea finally nailed him.

I have OSA, I always use my APAP (an improvement over CPAP) and the mask strap lines don't last very long all and they look nothing like those on Mister Biden.

My understanding is that CPAP needs to have the pressure manually titrated to the correct level to open the air passages. APAP attempts to automate the titration process to get the pressure right. If I go that direction, I'll have to see what works best. My sister is well ahead of me with CPAP devices in use for many years.

You are correct, the APAP adjusts automatically to changes in needed pressure.

The only potential problem with an APAP is when it's set wide open with a pressure range of 5 to 20 cm. That's a prescription for failure as a patient needs to go into frank apnea before the machine adjusts.

It works best to set the lower pressure at the titrated pressure (often about 10 cm or so) and the higher pressure 5 or 6 cm above that. You need to tell your Doc that this optimization is what you want.

The online apnea community has tons of advice on set up and how to monitor your data daily. Good luck!

Since the lines were still visible he must have been sleeping a short time before.

Some have denied that he wears a cpap mask ... instead is fitted with an anti-sniffer cage when not in public.

I do because I wear my straps pretty tight because I’ll sleep on my stomach most of the night.

Years ago when I first got mine, we went to KC for a baseball tournament & I thought, why bring it, it’s only a couple nights. I about fell asleep driving home a dozen or more times. I won’t go overnight now without it.

Two months ago, I threw part of my headset away thinking I had new one to replace it. That night I realized I didn’t and the garbage men had come earlier that day so the old one was gone. The next day I was miserable so I drove to my supplier 20 miles away vs. waiting the 2-3 days to get the replacement part in the mail.
