Church attendance in the United States is lower than it was before the Covid-19 pandemic, a new survey indicated.
In the new Gallup survey, 31 percent of respondents said they have attended church, synagogue, mosque or temple in the last seven days.
In Gallup polls conducted from 2020 to the most recent May 1-24, 2023 poll, an average of 30 percent of respondents said they had attended services in the last week.
These data represent a modest decline of an average of four points since the four-year period before the pandemic, when an average of 34 percent of respondents said they had attended church, synagogue, mosque or temple in the last seven days.

I imagine this is primarily among the liberal mainstream denominations.
So do I.
My church also has a healthy money flow, but since they established weekly livestreaming of their services during the pandemic, many people continue to attend virtually. So in-person attendance is down from pre-pandemic levels.
Also, the giving app Givify has helped our church with maintaining revenue through automatic weekly giving payments. With Givify, people "set it and forget it."
Peculiar way to prevent data. Comparing to an average across years when the important thing is the trend over time, is stupid. Or it means they want to hide something, like the fact that this year is a small increase from the years before. Their own graph shows an obvious decline during the pandemic, when churches were basically closed, but now showing a small rebound. Admittedly, not much of one, and despite the long term declining trend in attendance.
A lot of people got out of the habit of getting out of the house at all.
Mission Accomplished.
Unfortunately, the trend in Americas HAS been declining attendance/believers and THAT is the root to American identity.
The first buildings built in a new town were the Post Office, Church, School and Bank.
IMO, church and school were the most important because they served two entities; families and children, the cornerstone(s) to ANY social structure, whether here or in Timbuktu.
Of course it is. Churches caved to the government, everyone stayed home, God did not spite them, why go back. The church lost a whole generation, especially with the media and left-wing war against churches.
Right now, our Church is very health with focus on Christ’s word without any deviation. We are getting people traveling from NJ and locations over an hour away because they can’t find a solid Church. I would imagine most people are NOT doing this and simply opt to not go or watch online from time to time when things get “bad”.
"Then came the churches, then came the schools
Then came the lawyers, then came the rules
Then came the trains and the trucks with their loads
And the dirty old track was the Telegraph Road"
What used to be my church has nearly collapsed. A leftist cabal in the Council of Bishops took advantage of the dempanic and closed the building for far too long. When it finally began to reopen the new pastor made it clear conservative traditionalists were not welcome. Attendance has dropped from 300+ to about 70. Indications are pointing toward being able to sell the valuable piece of real estate which would go a long way towards funding a dwindling retirement fund.
I think the decline has little to do with Covid.
Churches have become the “latest fad” to attract crowds. Gross modern ? “music” to bring in the generation following Boomers. It’s getting old to the latest generation.
Guess what, you now have to have naked men prancing up and down the aisles and men who have tucked everything they have and donned make up and skirts to attract the newest generation. Don’t forget Bible-stories read to our children by drag queens and of course, gay marriage. That should boost attendance.
That is the problem with making “religion” a fad.
Perhaps many churches signaled that the importance of regular weekly attendance “depends”.
Depends on the science. LOL
” Gross modern ? “music””
The ONE thing I like about organized religion. CCM Contemporary Christian Music.
God LOVES music. God LOVES singing. He gave most of us the gift of music appreciation. He gave others the gift of creating/performing music.
Of course satan HATES anything God loves. That is why satan destroys (or tries to) the lives of those who produce music.
By your description, Gross modern ? “music”, I suspect you don’t like Contemporary Christian Music, but think hymns are great.
Look at the copyright dates of the hymns in your hymn book. You will see that most are from the 19th century. ONE THOUSAND EIGHT HUNDRED plus years BEFORE Christ.
So WAY back in the 18 hundreds, your favorite hymns were Contemporary Christian Music.
The communist Hill is gleeful.
I have been back to church only once since the pandemic. I don’t plan to return.
Organized religion is not for me. I LOVE my God (Jesus). He loves ME! Whether I go to the hypocritical church or not.
I worship Him and spread the gospel in my own way. When I listen to CCM he hears it as praise, directly to Him. I import the feeling of love for Him directly to Him through that music. (some hymns as well)
The artists convey their love of Him, to Him and me, at the same time.
The churches, in general, have lost their way. This is not new, as Jesus points out in Revelation 2.
“I imagine this is primarily among the liberal mainstream denominations.”
What liberal denominations preach is actually lower than mindless ritualistic chanting. It has no heart, no soul, no real belief, and no expectations.
I’ve been “unchurched” for over two decades.
The reasons for that are of little interest to anyone other than myself.
But to paraphrase Reagan, I didn’t leave the church, the church left me.
Ping.
The Heirarchs who instilled a spirit of fear by in many cases EXCEEDING the unconstitutional and illegal government “guidance” must bear much responsibility.
Even as recently as autumn 2021 I know of one Lutheran bishop who continued to fearmonger that it was “too dangerous” to resume singing. And then he got COVID anyway.
