12 years ago, Gert-Jan Oksam was in a biking accident. He emerged alive, but unable to use his legs due to a spinal cord injury.
Today he can walk about 100 meters — or just over 300 feet— all on his own. Essentially, he's taught his spinal cord to work again thanks to some small implants in his back and brain, which have rehabilitated the connection between his legs and his mind.

Good for him and his progress, but AI is still creepy to me.
I doubt it is creepy to this fortunate guy.
Some of us in our Church have been visiting a 55 year old quadriplegic member of the Knights of Columbus. I’ve been reading to him, which he really appreciates. I was just thinking this week, that he’s young enough that he might be able to move more in his lifetime. It would be wonderful!
I know call me a Luddite, good for the gentleman regaining his walk, but I don't trust AI.
Seems whatever is used for good can also be used for evil. I’m happy for the man.
Having worked with many quadriplegics through the years, this may be the long anticipated miracle.
I know, and I am glad of the technology to help people, but in the back of my mind, is this the new vaccine.
I know, you think I'm nuts.
They look healthy to me.
But it truly is sensational. Journalists just can't help themselves. They lie even for a non-controversial story.
If there is one group who is neglected it is those quadriplegics who are under gov. health insurance. Friend of ours (about 20% use of one arm, 10% of other, but loves to get out and around in electric wheel chair) has been in a cycle for years.
PCA help ($18 per hour - $3 more than minimum wage, and only paid for 2 hours over night) stops showing up
=bed sores=ER or straight to nursing home, locked up on for months (often not turned when supposed to)
=healed but cannot get help lined up (thus cannot go home)
=gets help lined up
=goes home but PCA's soon stop showing up-bed sores.
Rinse and repeat.
Months to replace wheelchair, and no option to get a handicapped apt closer to where help is more likely to get.
Thank God for what is provided (vs. most other countries). My proposal: create a system of assisted living care centers, which are always staffed, with PCA pay being at least 40% more than minimum, and with freedom to leave in the afternoon till about 7PM. Would likely cost less money than the cycle. Lord have mercy.
Sure, if had zero physical therapy in that 12 years.
Say what you will, that Terminator has a decent set of choppers. Must be great if they find a rib place or something.
I guess Skynet has a good dental plan.
(Hey I’m copyrighting that joke ...!!!!)
It’s not a lie if the reporter is too dumb to understand the difference.
Of course if he mis-genders someone, they’ll shut his legs down ....
ShadownRun and Cyber Punk implications here. Is the DNI (Direct Neural Interface) far behind?
AI is only as bad as those programming it. If we fail to pursue AI development, you can bet in 10 years we will decry the fact that China is kicking our tail using it.
This appears to read brainwaves and help restore connections. It must involve various types of AI, but I don’t think it’s exactly what people generally think of when they ‘fear’ AI.
