American higher education is undergoing several revolutions at the same time. The DEI revolution, ongoing for decades, has reached a tipping point. The professorial class and campus administrations are close to cementing it as the official ideology of American universities. However, a rearguard action, led by Gov. Ron DeSantis in Florida, finds its state legislature aiming to eliminate the DEI offices that symbolize and spearhead this radicalization, pointing toward an education that emphasizes professional competence and reasonable patriotism.
Soon, shrinking enrollments and a demographic cliff will strain many colleges and universities to the breaking point. Enrollments, 20.5 million in 2011, the high crest, shrank to around 17.75 million in 2020. Education analysts now consider annual losses of .5% of students or about 100,000 students to be “stabilizing” improvements on the more dramatic annual declines. This is nothing compared to what is coming. Demographers predict an average 15% decline in the number of students attending college every four years after 2025-2026 (a loss of about nearly 600,000 students every four years), as our low birth rate collides with our education institutions. The failed forces of nature cannot be avoided like angry legislators.
A shrinking number of “customers,” a “product” less valued than it once was, due in part to an insidious theory that has infected its self-understanding, means higher education is ripe for reorganization. State legislatures and Boards of Regents should now consider policies of patriotic downsizing and reorganizing. New modes and orders will make opportunities for new leaders, and new modes will definitely be called for...

Interesting theory. And from a controversial professor, at that! Truly, anything that breaks up the current academic cabal would welcome.
University of Minnesota, “brought to you by Moderna”. (Paid for by the peasants)
Simply make them absorb all of the student loan debt, as they can actually afford it.
Not to mention that their prices have been indefensible for decades.
The universities are not “shrinking”. They are just going back to the size they should be when they were started.
It is far, far, far harder for American kids to get into the same schools their parents went to one and two generations ago. That’s because the schools are saturated with the children of foreigners, or foreigners themselves, virtually all of whom came here after 1970.
And because they are now bloated and collecting big $$$ to do a pathetic job of “education” in overcrowded classes they are not going to let go: they will agitate for more and more foreigners: illegal aliens. Gotta have customers for the EduCrats! Pensions, you know.
The public and well endowed private universities are a racket to enrich and protect marxists. The more they can be defunded and made to pay for their position, the happier I am.
I think it would be a better idea if the Dung Beetle Party convinces their BLM supporters to loot them and then burn them down. Give the more useful Walmarts a break.
Just cut their funding by 30%
Let the departments fight for what remains and fight for the truly viable students. The useful ones like math, engineering or STEM will survive, while the humanities and social sciences will mostly be killed off
With every major and or prestigious university having more qualified applicants than there are slots, these schools are not suffering any issues with shrinking enrollments.
There will always be competition to get into top schools and there will be parents or other sources who will pay the tuitions.
One problem with your idea the vast majority of university\college senior administrators like presidents, provosts, etc. come from non-STEM backgrounds. They are not going to starve their fellow travelers! They’ll eliminate an EE department before they’ll eliminate a women’s studies department. Those decisions can not left in their hands!
btt
How about this? Get the government out of the education business. Don’t subsidize any part of education. Don’t back any education loan. The market will fix prices and the profitable degrees will survive.
If you really want to hurt the University Industrial Complex, go after their Endowments. Billion and Billions of easy money for the TAXING!!!!!
Lets start at a 75% WEALTH TAX!!!!!!
The left needs the universities to hide and flood the border crossers. These minority neighborhoods will only stand so much invading. Kick out the students that will never pay off the bogus loans and give housing to the new arrivals.
Just turn off the money spigot-
Zero Fed Dollars to Universities.
None.
No Research Grants - No Diversity Chairs - No Student Loans.
Not One Dime.
yup. Tuition went sky high with fed input. There should not be a federal department of indoctrination.
I’d expect even more foreigners rather than a downsizing.
easiest way to do that is to remove their endowments and let them use that and their real estate sales to pay for the student loans and fund education.
Classify the majors as essential and non-essential.
The democrats will give ‘free’ college education to the millions of illegals propping up the schools and piad for by taxpayers.
