California takes aim at freight train emissions, bans non-electric train engines

California is taking action to curb locomotive emissions operating within its borders as part of the state's sweeping climate agenda.

On Thursday, the California Air Resource Board (CARB), a state agency tasked with protecting air quality and reducing harmful pollution, announced that it would pursue aggressive regulations to limit freight train emissions. The so-called In-Use Locomotive Regulation makes California the first state to tackle freight train emissions which represent just 0.5% of total U.S. greenhouse gas emissions, according to federal data.

I don’t think the state has much authority over railroads. Pretty sure that’s an exclusively federal domain.

....electrified rail is currently used on less than 1 percent of U.S. railroad tracks....
(Many of those are in Northeast US commuter train systems.)

Okay, California will not get much of anything by rail, meaning a large portion of the country’s goods and supplies will not go there.

”…bans non-electric train engines.”

Would someone please tell the morons running California that diesel locomotives ARE electric? The only difference between those and what they envision as a replacement is the distance between the power plant and the electric drive motors. Diesel locomotives carry the power generators with them, while “electric” engines use distant, usually coal or natural gas-fired power plants and then transmit the electricity over power lines. Just because you can’t see the conventional power source for “electric” engines doesn’t mean they run on magical electricity that comes from the ether.

According to the Grateful Dead he was high on cocaine.

A total lie, of course.

John Luther “Casey” Jones was an American railroader who was killed when his passenger train The Cannonball collided with a stalled freight train at Vaughan, Mississippi on April 30, 1900. Jones was a locomotive engineer for the Illinois Central Railroad, based in Memphis, Tennessee, and Jackson, Mississippi.” He was born in Cayce, Kentucky and got his nickname from that.
from Mississippi Blues Trail and Wikipedia.

Interesting piece in The Roots of the Grateful Dead ——

I never thought I’d say it, but I must defend California here. In my younger days I spent considerable time working with all-electric trains. When they are handled properly, they provide excellent service with zero problems.

Oh, and here’s a snapshot of me from those days.

Lordy, they are morons. There isn’t a less expensive and cleaner method of moving goods than diesel locomotives. Where does CA think all this electricity is going come from?

At some point, there needs to be a Federal court case arguing that the California Air Resources Board is unconstitutionally restricting interstate commerce. See earlier article regarding diesel trucks.

What about all of the hot air coming out of politicians. All of those politicians are causing global warming. Where is Dr Saint Greta and why isn’t the retarded PhD saying anything about it.

Never worked on fuel systems for freight trains wasn’t a call for it.

I have been told that train engines use diesel to power electric motors. Maybe I heard wrong.

I guess I thought they were the original hybrid engines.

Perhaps someone can school me. ,(it’s Friday night and cooking and watching weather and jamming music).

Mr. Investor, will you be lining the State of California with solar panels?

No, the State of California would likely refuse to permit last mile transmission companies to pay a fair price for my electricity.

Mr. Investor, will you be lining the State of Arizona with solar panels?

No, the State of California would almost surely refuse to allow transmission line operators to pay a fair price for my electricity and operators in Nevada and Arizona would not be able to buy enough.

New Yorkers will freeze because natural gas is being banned and the electric heaters they’ll have on order will be stuck on electric trains in California during brownouts.
