Residents of the U.S. Southwest could one day power their homes with solar energy generated across the border — if a multi-pronged plan from the Mexican government comes to fruition.
A 120-megawatt capacity photovoltaic (PV) plant in the Sonoran seaside city of Puerto Peñasco already began feeding the national grid last month, while another 300 megawatts are expected to be online next year.
“Who could have told me that a state like Sonora, a net importer of energy that has historically been a net importer, now has the potential to be an energy-exporting state?” Sonora Gov. Alfonso Durazo asked at a recent sustainable energy forum.
Durazo’s remark underscores the ambition behind the project.

😂😂😂😂. If you have to ask.......
Boondoggle.
They would be better off building a nuke or coal plant.
“ Residents of the U.S. Southwest could one day power their homes with solar energy generated across the border — if a multi-pronged plan from the Mexican government comes to fruition.”
Big if.
Make believe article.
Who will pay for it? Gee, I wonder.
Beautiful area, apparently targeted for destruction. When I lived in Tucson we often went down to Rocky Point for weekends of beach and fun. Where the Sonoran desert met the sea. If this happens it will be a classic example of ruining the environment in the name of the environment.
Why should we become dependent and beholden to a foreign country for basic energy? You just know Mexico will exploit the advantage. “You want more energy, you take more illegals and with full benefits too!”
Why wouldn’t they?
This as they are ripping out all the hydroelectric dams in the northwest.
The disaster is the environmental fanaticism & zealotry that owns major parts of the American electorate.
Put any green dream stupidity in front of these government bureaucrats, elected officials, voters, etc, and they’re “all in.”
If the United States considers itself a Great Power Nation, we shouldn’t be looking to Mexico for a corporate solar power grid.
“It’s ridiculous.”
Well, the Sonoran desert has no shortage of sunshine. And no pesky EPA to complain about all the “habitat loss” either.
“be energy” should be “buy energy”
“They would be better off building a nuke or coal plant.”
Ah, but if their whole intent is to sell the power to stupid leftie Americans, then they probably would not be better off.
We already have the Palo Verde nuke plant in Arizona, which also supplies California during the summer months.
I remember those.
Fly larvae.
?
California does not want to build their own plant. Mexico could sell water to the USA.
As long as you don’t use electricity after the sun goes down. You know...when you want to use lights and heat your home during the cold nights.
Do they expect us to foot the $100 trillion expense of utility-scale batteries?
The U of A had an experiment station south of the town, think it was formally shut down some time ago. Never had the scale to go commercial and was supplanted by Central Arizona Project water eventually.
Considering the current overuse of Colorado water a desal effort could be revived.
Or, all those people could go home to Mexico and we wouldn't have the problem.
