The lesson we can learn from when Ronald Reagan toasted Jimmy Carter

The titanic political contest in 1980 between Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan is well known. It was a struggle between two very different men with two very different views of America and the world.

One believed in bigger government and one believed in smaller government. One believed we could work and coexist with the Soviets and one said he would "consign it to the ash heap of history." One believed in the individual and the other led a party whose platform said government was the principal creator of jobs.

During the campaign, Reagan often zinged Carter by saying, "Recession is when your neighbor loses his job. Depression is when you lose your job. And recovery is when Jimmy Carter loses his job!" Carter gave as good, often attacking Reagan on his issues and his conservatism.

And, there were many personal clashes in the 1980 campaign, culminating in their historic debate in Cleveland one week before the election. At the time, President Carter was ahead in some polls and was surging, but Reagan’s calm demeanor and command of the facts won the day and the debate for the Californian.

This is when the media was still not using it’s control to the same effect that they are doing today.

They brought down Nixon, but could not resuscitate Carter with 18% home mortgage interest rates and ‘stagflation’.

That was then, this is now.

The Demoncrats of today are not the Democrats of yesterday.

They are much, much, MUCH worse.

Case in point. Does anyone think that the way Reagan framed the common ground between Republicans and Democrats exists today:
He delved into the substance of his remarks saying, "None of us today need feel any urge, in the name of good will, to downplay our differences. On the contrary, in a certain sense we can be proud of our differences, because they arise from good will itself---for love of country; for concern for the challenges of our time; from respect for, and yes, even outright enjoyment of, the democratic processes of disagreement and debate."
This article, and its premise, is simply empty-headed nostalgia.

Even Ted, the Swimmer, abandoned Carter. Liberals had no enthusiasm for Carter. And without the base, you're pretty much screwed.

Ted ‘the swimmer’ really wanted the job and hated Carter for winning.

His half-hearted, limp-wristed, unenthusiastic handshake at the DEM convention said more than anything else.

Carter's fate was sealed right there.

No, they’re the same. Just more subtle back then.

Carter’s low point in the polls was late summer/early fall when Anderson was doing well. Carter’s “surge” was just recovering from those lows.

Reagan and Carter though would prove that there are bigger things than ego.

Is he kidding? Watch the 60 Minutes interview with Carter from 1985. Carter was bitter to the core.

“That was then, this is now.”

A mild mannered leader, whose smile conceals the collective agenda. It usually starts with such baby steps, leading soon enough to goose-steps.

Reagan defeated Russia in the Cold War. Darn shame we don’t have him around today.

Reagan would have helped rebuild the Russian economy, instead of exploiting it, as his successors did.

Nixon's greatest crime was beating McGovern in an historic nationwide landslide. No one in the media voted for Nixon or knew anyone who did, so he must have stolen the election and had to be punished.

The media reacted to Trump in the same way. How DARE he beat Hillary? It was her turn, dammit! No one in the media voted for Trump or knew anyone who did, so he must have stolen the election and had to be punished.

Reagan defeated Russia in the Cold War.

Reagan: Peace through strength.

Biden: Peace through total capitulation.

They wanted Nixon's scalp ever since HUAC. They thought they were done with him after 1960, but he came back.

But he had a target on his back from Day One of his Presidency. They'll successfully indoctrinated people into believing Vietnam was "Nixon's War". It was like Kennedy and LBJ never existed.

“Reagan would have helped rebuild the Russian economy, instead of exploiting it, as his successors did.”

The problem is that Russia is populated by too many people who see brutality and corruption as a way of life. All the help in the world cannot make the Russians disabuse themselves of their love of strongmen and their admiration of thuggish behavior.

They have to make those changes on their own.

That was the model, bro.

Get ‘em a taste of the good life and MTV, get their cities as shiny and fun as ours can be, get their politicians nice and buyable and moderate like ours and stop worrying about them nuking us... It worked OK, but a Marshall Plan for the ex-USSR would have been a GREAT investment.
