So does the pilot list this as a career accomplishment? Bet the students can get some mileage out of this for their college applications.
I agree, not buying it.
The University of Alabama Huntsville engineering department used to have a project where the students built a telemetry package which was mounted on a balloon. The final exam was to locate where the balloon came down.
They shouldaughta send the Air Force a bill for $12 to cover the replacement cost...
Are these people putting balloons at 30 to 40,000 feet ?
They are a dangerous to commercial aviation .
Joe let a very sophisticated electronic maneuverable spy craft float across strategic areas of the United States. He knew it was coming since it launch. He knew its path. He did not shoot it down over Alaska, nor Canada nor Montana areas of little habitation and the danger of a shoot down to civilians was almost nil. He did nothing until it gathered much intel and then shot it down in the Atlantic. What gear that is recovered will be far more damaged than if a hard landing on land. Thus intel from the remains will be more compromised.
It is almost as if Joe was doing what the Chinese instructed him to do. There are only 3 explanations.
1. Joe is compromised to the Chinese.
2. Joe is an asset of the Chinese.
3. Joe’s advisors (they really are the president) are assets of the Chinese.
Nothing else makes sense.
I have a friend from our Ham radio group who has launched balloons like this. They are pretty cool. His never stayed aloft that long. I will tell him to step up his game.
Traumatic....4 or 5 mil should cover it
May have been a ham radio balloon.
This is exactly why the Vulcans are waiting until we get warp technology. First contact is screwed.

Got the pipeline sabotage off the news.
Every report up to this one has been propaganda. Finally some truth is getting out
So, a 32-inch mylar balloon with a payload no bigger than a credit card is "dangerous to commercial aviation"? If so, maybe "commercial aviation" ought to think about hardening themselves up. Otherwise, your statement is ridiculous.
The reality is, these incidents have made our vaunted "military establishment" look like fools . . . and a few numbnuts around here don't like it, apparently, that this is increasingly being made apparent. Well, wise up yourselves, is what I say. Our military today is a frigging joke, with clowns for leaders, at the Pentagon as well as in the Oval Office.
Our Tax Dollars At Work Financing The New Democrat Party Idiocracy
There’s more brains and common sense in the Northern Illinois Bottlecap Balloon Brigade (NIBBB) than in ALL the White House staff. The American military is made to look silly by being given a VAST OVERREACTION MISSION (shoot down objects like the NIBBB hobby balloon) to compensate for THE VAST UNDER REACTION of the Biden regime to the Chinese intelligence balloon.
“ Are these people putting balloons at 30 to 40,000 feet ?

Yes these hobby balloons frequently are at that height. Danger to commercial aviation? In all the decades of commercial aviation, how many planes have been brought down by collisions with weather or hobby balloons?
The answer is ZERO. How many hobby or weather balloons have been brought down on Biden’s orders at the cost of millions of dollars? Three or four.
YOU CANNOT MAKE THIS STUFF UP.
50 years ago you could buy these balloons in the classified adds in Popular Mechanics. My brothers and I used to make huge ones from black plastic sheets.
