(NewsNation) — Grocery shoppers have become resourceful amid America’s ongoing record inflation, which has spiked grocery prices by 13% over the last year.

According to a September Food Dive study, six out of 10 of the 2,000 surveyed consumers reported buying foods close to the expiration date due to affordability, with 46% saying they disregard the printed expiration date altogether.

While discount grocery shopping isn’t new, the report did find this eye-opening stat: 16.6% of those shopping for bargains started doing so this year.

Just ask Ron Rojas — the owner of Chicago, Illinois, discount grocery store Continental Sales Lots 4 Less.

While he has been selling food up to the expiration date or past the expiration date for 40 years, it wasn’t until recently that Rojas had to make renovations for growth.

For most canned or dry food, the expiration date does not mean the food is bad or tastes different.

In my local drug store, the Rubbing Alcohol has an expiration date - two years hence.

Why?

Note that the Vodka did not.

it is a liability issue. Has nothing to do with the actual product.

A few things are better if they’re not too far out of date, like canned fruit and some soups. I always mark the expiration date on canned goods with a Sharpie when I buy them, so it’s easier to keep track.

A few years ago, a younger coworker was horrified that I was about to eat a can of ravioli that was a year or so out of date. I just laughed. I recently ate a can of corned beef that was about 15 years past its date, with no ill effects.

Bulging or rusty cans go in the trash unopened.

Here's a "best use by" date on 250 million year old Himalayan salt.

As a former veterinary food inspector in the USAF and Army, food in cans and in proper storage can be eaten safely long after the expiration date if monitored correctly and still be wholesome and palatable. I always look for deals in supermarkets for foods with soon to be or expired dates that have been marked down.

I most always buy my meat product from the expired sell by date bin. I either freeze it or use it up to 5 days later from the fridg.

I too throw flippers, swellers, and leakers in canned goods in the trash when found. That also goes for dried products with insect infestations...even though they are safe I just don't like eating many food storage insects, even though we do that in normal appearing dry goods.

My mother-in-law buys this stuff, it’s not bad when I have used it.

That could be correct. At work we age test products to a date requested from the marketing department. For instance I am writing a 10 year aging protocol. The product would probably be good for a century.

However if it sits in the warehouse 10 years then we aren’t selling it and it should be dropped from the product line.

I miss the old Hostess bakery outlets. Twinkies for twenty cents, bread for fifty cents.

My parents used to go there.
Mom would buy huge bags of stuff like twinkies, and bread and honeybuns and freeze them. I remember Mickey’s banana Flips, my fave, were 10 for a dollar.

We have some old bread stores here, but they are just about as expensive as the regular stores.................
