Newsweek: Mitch McConnell is Spending More Than Trump on MAGA Candidates
Newsweek ^ | 11/05/2022 | Anna Skinner

Former President Donald Trump speaks loudly about the Republican candidates he's backing for the midterm elections. His money isn't always where his mouth is, however, at least not to the same level as Senate Minority Leader Republican Mitch McConnell.

With Election Day just four days away, Republicans are fighting to flip the Senate in their favor. Many Trump-endorsed candidates are neck-and-neck in tight races against their Democratic opponents. Every dollar counts this close to the election and despite last minute fundraising pushes on both sides, many races remain tight. In the meantime, Trump is directing his attention toward McConnell, a Kentucky Republican, blaming him for allowing Democrats to "blow up the debt ceiling." The former president also said that Republicans should impeach McConnell rather than choosing to funnel more money into races supported heavily by his political action committees (PAC).

"It's crazy what's happening with this debt ceiling," Trump said Thursday during an interview on John Fredericks' Real America's Voice. "Mitch McConnell keeps allowing it to happen. I mean they ought to impeach Mitch McConnell if he allows that. Frankly, Mitch McConnell—they have something on him."

Instead of criticizing or impeaching McConnell, an opinion piece by conservative and former White House speechwriter Marc Thiessen published Thursday in The Washington Post, said Republicans should thank the Senate minority leader if the GOP wins the Senate come Tuesday.

The newspaper reported that Trump has raised a whopping $161 million for campaigns this year, but his Make America Great Again (MAGA) super PAC has spent a measly $14.8 million in Senate races as opposed to McConnell's super PACs, which have funneled $238 million into Senate races to "bail out" Trump-backed candidates.

Thiessen used Republican J.D. Vance's campaign as an example.

Trump supported “MAGA” candidates that are not really MAGA.

A report by AdImpact reported that McConnell's super PAC Senate Leadership Fund (SLF) was the leading group donating to Senate races. SLF donated $205 million of the $238 million from McConnell's PACs, distributed across nine Republican Senate candidates.

According to the article, SLF is heavily focusing its efforts on races in Georgia, Pennsylvania and North Carolina. Each of those Republican candidates received more than $30 million from SLF for their campaigns.

He’s supported a lot of candidates and the vast majority, like Kari Lake, are MAGA warriors.

That is a Clinton Foundation ratio.

No politician spends his own money, except maybe on his own campaign. McConnell is spending money from donations for the mid-term elections - that money comes from individuals and lobbying groups. And that's exactly what Trump is doing too.

Does that include the costs of the (once a week or more) rallies he does for Republicans?
That is a Clinton Foundation ratio.
I wasn't aware The Clinton Foundation raised money for political campaigns...Except their own.

Wasn't that money raised from mostly foreigners for influence...I mean charities?

Thiessen forgot the $70 million Trump gave to the RNC to fund other candidates plus the $50 million Trump spent on rallies which generate BILLIONS in free publicity.

Regarding J.D. Vance, Peter Thiel and McConnell came to an agreement: Thiel finances Masters in Arizona, and McConnell finances Vance in Ohio.

McConnell made a slightly different deal regarding Buldoc in New Hampshire: he (McConnell) would match the money spent by certain conservative PACs.

These deals freed up money for McConnell to spread the table, and spend some money in CO, CT and WA. These expenditures forced the other side to divert resources they would have preferred to spend in AZ, GA, NC, NH, OH and PA.

Regarding Trump, I suspect Trump is spending a lot of the money he has raised for his rallies. Trump is a great retail campaigner. Maybe the best of this era. He personally connects with people that otherwise might not vote and, so, is very effective in GOTV.

Plus, let’s recognize that it was Donald Trump who opened the Republican Party to blacks and Hispanics. The great influx of Hispanics and lesser but still significant influx of blacks that is propelling our party is victory is because of that man.

Anybody can criticize others for their shortcomings. But, in fairness, how about we recognize what people accomplish?

This is an attempt to create a circular firing squad. A lot of these spending shifts are coordinated. McConnell’s PAC did remove ad buys for the last two weeks in NH, but this was after spending many millions of dollars in heavy ad buys on both radio and TV for over a month, with the NRSC then stepping in and buying ads for the last two weeks.
