The Nation’s Elie Mystal Friday MSNBC’s “All In” that Georgia Republican Senate nominee Herschel Walker was a “minstrel” playing a black version of Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-AL).
While discussing a report Walker allegedly paid for a woman’s abortion, which Walker denied, Mystal said, “The interrogation, really, isn’t about Walker, who is a minstrel who has been sent here to play black Tommy Tuberville. That is all he is. He is not, actually, important. The interrogation needs to happen with the Republican Party. Because what we see, time and again, is at this debate, this argument over abortion has never been about abortion, it’s never been about morality, it’s never been about Jesus, it is all about controlling women.”

Stepin Fetchit created a clown-type image, a seemingly simple-minded man who actually was quite sly. He parlayed this image into one of the most successful careers of actors of any color of his day. He was the first black actor to gain a film credit, and the first to earn a million dollars (which was big money in those days).
I’d liken his character to Charlie Chaplin’s pantomime clown or Red Skeleton’s hobo clown. Of course, nobody thought Chaplin or Skeleton was betraying the white race because there were plenty of images play by white actors, the entire range of characters from villains to heroes.
Today, as we get used to seeing black actors like Denzel Washington in all kinds of roles, we should be able to appreciate the accomplishments of people like Stepin Fetchet. But, some people are stuck in the past because of their disappointment, envy and hate.
LSDMSNBC is proud to have that clown on their program????? No wonder why only 9 people watch it!
