Arizona Democratic lawmaker who just won Senate primary resigns

No one left on ballot in Arizona state Senate district..

A Democratic member of the state House of Representatives who just won his primary for state Senate announced Friday that he is resigning, leaving no one on the ballot in his southwest Phoenix district.

Diego Espinoza defeated a fellow House member Richard Andrade in the August primary for District 22's Senate seat. The heavily Democratic district covers parts of Glendale, Phoenix, Avondale and Tolleson and drew no Republicans.

Espinoza said he has accepted a job with the Salt River Project in community and government relations. He owns a restaurant in Tolleson and has served four terms in the House.

The unexpected resignation means a write-in candidacy is the only option for filling the seat through the election.

...

Andrade said. "It shows this isn't the type of leadership we need, where you deceived the voters into thinking you're working for your community when, in reality, you're working for your self-interest."

Inexcusable. Nobody Republican in that district cared enough about their district to run?

Not inexcusable if the district is so heavily Democrat that it is a hopeless cause.

Waste of resources to run in a district in which there is no chance of success. Unlike Democrats who are funded by Billionaires like Soros, Bloomberg, Zukerberg, Gates, etc Republicans have limited resources.

Quite true.

But you never know...in this case, it would have been Republican for 4 years, though likely no longer.

You should always have every race contested...find a credible person to at least be willing to file the paperwork even if they do nothing else.

There will be a lawsuit to ensure that there is a democRAT on the ballot.

Kinda like how the corrupt Supreme Court in the People’s Democratic Republic of New Jersey forced the fossilized Frank Lautenberg onto the ballot after the legal cutoff date had passed because the Dem candidate, Robert Torricelli was so damaged by his own corruption scandals that he had no chance of winning, and was forced to drop out.

“I guess that would only be for a special election.”

We have a procedure where I am to fill a vacancy even just before an election. If the vacancy is Republican, an R vacancy committee fills it.

Same reason senator cotton doesn’t typically have an opponent. Why run if you have no chance.
