Just when I thought woke, mainline American Protestantism couldn’t descend any further into self-parody, the liberal Evangelical Lutheran Church in America went and surprised me.
Here’s a summary, courtesy of Dr. Jordan B. Cooper, a pastor in one of the conservative rump denominations that didn’t join the ELCA:
Neurodivergent nonbinary trans pastor is made bishop. This individual then disciplines abusive latinxpastor. But this is unknowingly done on a Hispanic holiday and is thus racist. Woman archbishop rebukes bishop but isn’t harsh enough so is then also racist.
Wait, what?
It all started when Bishop Megan Rohrer of the ELCA’s Sierra Pacific Synod fired a pastor named Nelson Rabell-González who appears to have two passions in life: the Black Lives Matter movement and verbally abusing people.

Here’s the thing: Lutherans don’t celebrate the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe. That’s a Catholic thing. The Marian apparitions the feast commemorates happened eleven years after the pope excommunicated Martin Luther. Apparently, Rabell-González’s church was planning to mark the occasion in some way, but this strikes me as a weirdly condescending bit of syncretism. A Hispanic Lutheran celebrating the Guadalupe apparitions makes about as much sense as an Arabic Catholic celebrating Ramadan.

Who says these fakes are “mainline”?
Cooper doesn’t belong to a “rump organization.” He belongs to the LCMS, which is much older and thus the mainline Lutheran Church. The ECLA, etc., are the rebellious spinoffs of mainline churches, not the other way around.

I have a new way to ‘present’ myself and my preferred pronoun is FJB.
At well less than 1% of the population, the ELCA is rapidly devolving into splinter group status. The Mainline, a historic group of protestant churches, are all rapidly dwindling and dying on the vine; mostly because once they abandoned the Law and perverted the Gospel, the Holy Spirit got His hat and blew the apostate pop stands.
Protestants have their embrassassments too.
We just don’t put them in silly hats and bend to kiss their rings.

Historically, they were. No so much now.
Now, he often conducts funeral services in basically closed churches due to lack of active members.
When he first retired about a decade ago, he conducted monthly services or every two months in basically closed churches. Now, those churches can barely have a funeral service.
Of course no religion thread is complete without a bit of good old fashioned anti-Catholic bigotry, no matter how unrelated to the topic it may be.
Yup, happens every time.
And I was just thinking this might be a thread to show how apostate all the big “Protestant” (non-Catholic, non-Orthodox) churches are, at least in America.
I’m basically Lutheran, and yes I have a good deal of Catholic appreciation (some upbringing, mother’s devotions). I’ve been seen as a Catholic apologist here but, it’s true - almost always the vitriol is against Catholicism and if not, it was usually started by the anti-Catholic.
