Russia’s failure to achieve major goals in Ukraine is ‘quite embarrassing,’ ex-U.S. official says

Russia has failed to achieve its strategic goals in the first hundred days of the war and Ukraine need not cede substantial territory to end it, William Courtney, adjunct senior fellow at Rand Corporation, told CNBC’s “Capital Connection” on Monday.

Russia began its invasion of Ukraine on Feb. 24, calling it a “special military operation.” The war entered its 100th day on Friday.

“Over 100 days, the Russians have pulled back their aims at least tactically, perhaps not strategically, quite a lot. The original goal was to seize three major cities: Kyiv, Kharkiv and Odessa. Russian troops had to withdraw from Kyiv and Kharkiv. And [they] have not been able to get close to Odessa,” said Courtney, who also served as U.S. ambassador to Georgia and Kazakhstan.

Courtney said there’s a chance that the war could lead to Russian President Vladimir Putin’s ouster from office. “There could be regime change in Russia. The intense pressure that Western sanctions are beginning to put on the Russian economy combined with battlefield setbacks could cause ... popular unrest, elite infighting,” he said.

I was just thinking the same thing. No matter what happens in Ukraine now the entire world is laughing at Russia. It has shown itself to be run by incredibly stupid men who sacrificed an entire generation of young Russian men for nothing. Add to that the Potemkin Village that is the Russian army has been exposed for the entire world to see.

No one knows for sure what was intended by Putin at first.

Probably, it was to take the whole country in a Coup de Main.

Most people were surprised when it did not work.

Now, probably, he is willing to settle for much less.

Russia is now sending in the PT-76 light tanks. Some of those have been going to the scrapyard.

We were in Afghanistan for how many years, fighting goat herders with AK-47s, and some sheepdip is saying Russia couldn't destroy a modern equipped army in 3 and a half months proves they are a failure?

What intellegent person buys this constant firehose of propaganda?

This is a bgger pantload than Biden's diaper. And the diaper-sniffers are lapping it up.

Hey, you know how much the 40 billion is going to benefit the American people, or, for that matter the Ukrainian people?

NADA.

“The original goal was to seize three major cities: Kyiv, Kharkiv and Odessa.”

I wonder why Milley’s flying monkey singled out these cities? These clowns know everything about winning...or not.

The primary consequence of winning slowly is the writers have to literally resort to telepathy to have generate articles for filing by their deadlines and earn their paychecks.

Most writing is offering up something imaginary and then analyzing the imagination in detail.

I have seen RT and Al Jazeera on site reporting from front lines of the Donbas. Almost daily. I have seen a few BBC or WaPo reporters on site close enough to hear the artillery, but not very many at all. Which is more reason for telepathy. They don’t have on site reportage.

LOL!

Pootie will be the judge of that, not some pus-producing pimple from the RAND Corporation.

Apparently, Courtney was present at the Russian high command meeting with Putin.

Or the Western telepaths once again scored an intelligence coup with their Kremlin embeds.

“Russia is now sending in the PT-76 light tanks. Some of those have been going to the scrapyard.”

The kind and thoughtful Soviets are instead shipping them to Ukraine so they can be scrapped in Ukraine.

No matter what happens in Ukraine now the entire world is laughing at Russia.

Laugh now.

Winter is coming - to Europe, and to the United States.

My price per therm of natgas has tripled in 6 months, and it's only June.

prices were already going up long before the botched Ukraine invasion

Biden and Democrats could open the producing areas tomorrow to lower prices if they really wanted, but they don’t, because they hate oil
