When Katie Britt announced her run for Senate in Alabama last June, private polling pegged her name recognition at 8% and political support among Republican voters at just 4%.
Nearly one year later, Britt finished first, with 44.75%, in Tuesday’s primary and is favored to defeat Rep. Mo Brooks in a June 21 runoff.
Runoffs are not always hospitable to establishment-backed candidates who win round one but fall short of 50%. Brooks weathered losing former President Donald Trump’s endorsement in March, and he enters the runoff with some momentum. But Britt’s performance in the primary was so sweeping that Alabama GOP insiders are picking her to win the runoff and pick up the party’s Senate nomination without too much trouble.
“It’s pretty baked, in my opinion,” said a Republican operative with Alabama ties who had supported businessman and military veteran Mike Durant in the primary. Durant finished third, with 23.33%, behind Brooks, who garnered 29.15%.
What’s driving the confidence in Britt against a conservative stalwart like Brooks, who theoretically should do well in what is expected to be a low-turnout runoff that might see just 16% to 18% of eligible voters participate? To begin with, Britt won 62 of 67 counties in the primary. Plus, in three of the five counties Britt lost, she fell short by less than 100 votes.
Britt, 40, the former chief of staff to retiring Sen. Richard Shelby (R-AL), was strong in conservative, rural Alabama — counties chock full of grassroots conservatives where, presumably, Brooks needs to excel if he is to have any chance of pulling an upset.

Sickening...
Oh, great - Shelby in a skirt. Alabama, can’t you figure this one out?
The Bush League are good at manipulating low information Republicans.
It was a potentially devastating (to the success of Trump’s potential future agenda) blow for Trump to withdraw his support of Mo Brooks thus allowing Mitch McConnell’s ally to very possibly becoming Alabama’s next Senator.
Correct.
Mitch has spent millions propping up Britt and it looks like its working/worked.
Unreal they cannot see through this and are likely to give her the nomination.
Battle of the RINOs. It’s amazing there isn’t a single conservative in the state of Alabama to run for Senate.
Does Trump really think Britt is a better bet to push lection integrity or even to investigate the 2020 fraud. The scenario not reviewed here is for Trump to come back in for Brooks , which makes the most sense. He’s got to hate McConnell more than he hates Brooks.
The self loathing white male is one of the largest demographics in the Democrat party.
The conservative defeating RINO voter is one of the largest demographics in the Republican party.
Seems to happen in a lot of states. The most conservative ones have the biggest RINOs and they’re impossible to get rid off.
It’s why you see support for repealing the 17th on here because Freepers are sick of it
Sour grapes?
It’s a strange phenomenon I think.
This is why when you have a good one make it to the U.S. Senate (from wherever) you need to support them :
Rand
Mike Lee
Hawley
Braun
Tuberville (ironically, this Alabama senator is showing promise in my opinion)
The list isn’t long. Sorry if I missed anyone.
“I cannot believe they’re going to put the hand-picked successor to Richard Shelby in the U.S. Senate for 6 years openly electing a RINO.
Sickening...”
You’re talking about the same people who despite voting for Roy Moore for about 30 years, even after he was impeached for something that we supported, and otherwise did not have a blemish on his record, suddenly believed the RINO and main stream propaganda that he was a pedophile. I did not fall for it, and I will not fall for the Mo Brookes propaganda, either. I voted for him in the primary and I will vote for him again in the run off.
Brooks is one of the most conservative members in the House. McConnell hates him and is pouring millions of dollars into Britt’s campaign.
John Boehnor came to Alabama a few years ago campaigning against Brooks. Brooks crushed the guy Boehnor was supporting.
Britt is married to a former Alabama football player and is saying the right things. A lot of Alabamians don’t keep up with the intricacies of Washington politics and don’t recognize her for what she is.
The more things change... The more they stay the same...
This RINO hack must be defeated. What a shameful disgrace Dick Shelby’s meatpuppet being installed.
“Sickening”
What’s even more sickening is the PAC’s that supports her.

Then there was the Austin TX based “Alabama RINO PAC” that did all her dirty work.
She never held an honest job. Worked on Shelby’s staff right out of college, then became a lobbyist.
She’s helped the poverty pimpin’ crime lord mayor of Montgomradishu steven reed draw up plans to defund the police. The very same steven reed who called President Trump (and by extension his supporters) “Trash”. https://www.al.com/news/2021/01/montgomery-mayor-steven-reed-under-fire-for-tweet-about-trump-trash.html
She’s a snake.
I don’t know a single person voting for her. My elderly parents voted for MeMa Ivey but voted for Mo. we will see. The word is she might have gotten 6-8% from democrats switching in the primary.
Well Shelby a former democrat had that seat for many, many years. Now his hand picked successor is poised to get the seat. I don’t like it but can’t say I’m shocked. She ran nonstop commercials for months and has money.
MO was supposed to finish third. With Durant baking Mo, I believe Britt will be fighting for her political life. The voters of Limestone and Maddison counties know better than to believe Mo is “too woke” for Alabama and made the runoff a reality. I don’t like to say it but we in my house are shaken in our confidence in Trump over this whole thing. After the crap with Moore, I am fuming. I hope Trump just stays out of it. I will be doing my part to send Mo to D.C. This time as a Senator. Alabama deserves better than Britt, Shelby or Jones.
