Bratton: During ‘Defund Insanity’ There Was Push to Take Cops out of Schools, Crime Crisis ‘Created by the Politicians’

Homeland Security Advisory Council Co-Chair and former Police Commissioner of Boston, Los Angeles, and New York Bill Bratton said that the crime problem in the U.S. “has been created by the politicians in many of our cities and states,” and the consequences have been seen.

Bratton said “during the height of the defund insanity in this city,” there was a push to take police out of schools.

“I speak out frequently…about the need for more, the stupidity of the defund the police movement that they quickly retreated from. We have almost 100,000 fewer police officers today than we had several years ago. Many departments did suffer defunding, Los Angeles, New York, and we see the consequences of that defunding before they reversed it in the serious crime rates that those cities are experiencing. One of the things that we need more funding for certainly is training of police officers. We don’t do enough initial training, and we certainly do not do enough in-service training throughout their career. … The crime crises in America today has been created by the politicians in many of our cities and states, certainly the case here in New York City, with their misguided criminal justice and bail reform efforts. ”

“I don’t think most school teachers want to be armed. That’s not what they signed up to do. They signed up to teach. So, the decision about what level of security we need in our schools is left up to each municipality. Here in New York City, during the height of the defund insanity in this city, there was an effort being made to basically take…police out of the school. The irony of it was that the majority of those school police are minorities themselves, many of whom have children in that school system.”

“So, let’s look to the source of this crime spike that we’re experiencing. It’s largely political, with the laws that they passed and the attacks on police.”

They took them out of one nearby nasty school.....and put them back after 6 months. They do help.

The "Gun-Free School Act of 1990 " created a system of young victims who had no defense.
Even in the recent Texas school shooting, two armed school security officers confronted the 'perp'
drew his fire, and the perp accidentally dropped his additional ammo, thus minimizing additional victims.

Wonder why Banjo-Boy and his adulterous wife aren’t talking about this? No, they want to blame Republicans for the Texas school shootings.

Well there was a cop on duty at Robb Elementary school. He did nothing to prevent the perp from entering the building and killing anyone. The solution isn’t more cops in schools. It’s about putting dangerous people with mental illnesses in mental health facilities, and empowering local communities to deal with such issues, i.e., teachers, and old students, having guns, so that these mentally ill individuals don’t think they will be the only person with a gun in a school.

Making children go to school in what amount to fortified bunkers solves the problem of spree killings IN THE SCHOOL, but confesses to the students that rampant perversity and craziness is going to continue OUTSIDE the school because society refuses to do what is necessary to stop it, that, therefore, any families they form in the future will not be safe, and that the life they were looking forward to basically does not exist for them.

Save their bodies, kill their souls.

We had a comprehensive and highly effective system of crazy control when I was a little child.

Why we cannot do the very simple things to bring it back escapes me.

Of course, you are correct, but if you do not deal with dangerous mentally ill people frequently (as I do), you may not know that a) getting an order to commit someone not guilty of a crime is impossible, and b) there are no facilities.

“We have almost 100,000 fewer police officers today than we had several years ago.”

This is a GOOD thing.

The police are of no benefit to middle class white people.

They will not enforce property laws that many of us are victims of, and prevent self protection.

Only blacks and other minorities benefit from large police forces.

And union coffers that support democrats.

So true. There are no facilities (unless a crime is committed first — the three largest psychiatric facilities in America are jails, only they aren’t equipped to deal with the mentally ill). Our treatment of the mentally ill in this country is scandalous, as is the damage done to the rest of society by our lack of a functioning mental health system.

The cops sectioned the Buffalo shooter last year after he typed “murder-suicide” in answer to an economics class question about what he planned to do when he retired. What happened? He was taken to a hospital emergency room where he waited 22 hours for a (likely overscheduled) psychologist to interview him for 15 minutes. The kid, manipulative and a skilled liar, convinced the shrink he was just kidding and “being stupid”. Would a more thorough examination have caught how sick in the head the kid truly was? We’ll never know.

***Yes, fixing our broken mental health system would cost money, but not fixing it costs a bundle in criminal justice system costs, costs associated with homelessness and ER visits.***

Over one third of inmates in our jails and prisons suffer from a severe mental illness (schizophrenia, bipolar, etc.) these institutions are not equipped to handle, let alone treat. Many have not even been charged yet, having to wait weeks and months for the psych evaluation required before they can be charged. Most cycle in and out of jail at great cost to the taxpayer (court costs, public defenders, expensive psych evaluations, jail costs, etc.)

At least a quarter of the homeless have a major mental illness.

About 10% of 911 calls involve a mentally ill person acting out. In New York City, “EDP” (code for mentally disturbed person) calls to 911 jumped from 97,000 in 2009 to almost 180,000 in 2018.

Waiting lists for mental health treatment are hundreds deep and many months long.

***Yet this very real and growing problem is almost never raised by the media or politicians. We really need to work on making this an issue. Educate ourselves and ask about it when candidates hold town halls, call in to talk radio shows, etc., call our congresscritters, etc.***

In 1955 there were 6000 beds for crazy people in New Hampshire.

Now there are 135.
