Most serious gun crimes are committed with stolen or illegally obtained firearms (if I recall my Lott books correctly).
How many serious gun crimes are committed with the registered buyer of a firearm that went through a NICS check? A low percentage I would wager.

Further to my post #6, you could probably even take out the black on black violent crime numbers in just New Orleans for Louisiana and Jackson for Mississippi and you would likely have those much lower rates for those states.
