Large retailers across the US have begun rationing baby formula after a recall and supply chain issues caused shortages.
In February, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a warning to consumers after baby formula manufacturer Abbott Nutrition recalled powdered formula, following reports that multiple babies had gotten sick with bacterial infections after consuming formula produced in its facility in Michigan.
The formula was later linked to the deaths of two infants, with the FDA reporting in its findings in March that the formula maker failed to maintain sanitary conditions and procedures at its manufacturing plant.
In addition to failing to maintain clean surfaces, FDA inspectors also reported finding a history of contamination with the bacteria cronobacter.
As a result of the recall, which affected certain Alimentum, EleCare, or Similac products, and ongoing supply chain issues, retailers including Walgreens, Target, CVS and Kroger have all begun rationing supplies of formula, according to the Wall Street Journal.
The rationing comes as an analysis by Datasembly, which analysed 11,000 sellers of baby formula in the country, found that baby formula brands hit out-of-stock per centages of 31 per cent in April 2022. The latest shortage findings mark an increase from 11 per cent nationwide in November.
“Inflation, supply chain shortages, and product recalls have brought an unprecedented amount of volatility for baby formula,” founder and CEO, Ben Reich, said. “We expect to continue to see the baby formula category being dramatically affected by these conditions. Baby formula stock has been one of the more affected categories so far in 2022, and one that will continue to demonstrate higher than average out-of-stock levels.”

C’mon ...
This is ridiculous...
It’s too bad God didn’t provide a means for mothers to nurse their babies that didn’t involve corporate supply chains.
Uhhhhhh...I hate to be crude but if your baby is hungry pull out a teat and let them eat.
I no longer trust the government, not even a little bit and there are too many cards falling into the bad column— too many to be happenstance. They are squeezing like a snake.
I recall seeing that customers were limited to a specific amount of formula last week in my local Walmart. If this is still a problem within 2 months of the election, Biden and his Congress are in trouble. I can’t imagine anything more important to a mother than a shortage (by whatever means) of food for her children.
our local grocery stores have had baby formula locked up forever.
Maybe the shortage is due to drug dealers using it to cut
Yep. My very frugal son and his bride decided early that she would breast feed exclusively. GD is thriving.
Sounds like breast feeding will be fashionable sooner than we thought.
Maybe women should try nursing, first.
It usually works, is very convenient, a lot cheaper, and smells WAY better than gag a maggot formula.
Did byedin sign a EO cutting off the baby formula pipe line?
When my children were babies, we used the formula recipe in the now re-written Dr. Spock book that omits it. Evaporated milk, distilled water, and vitamin drops. They loved it and boy was it inexpensive.
A couple of years back it was the Chinese going out and purchasing all they could because there were no trustworthy brands in China.
Baby formula is a marketeer’s dream come true. That stuff didn’t exist before or shortly after I was born; and, I never had a nutritional problem. My mother nursed me and then she used ordinary cow’s milk.
Unfortunately breastfeeding is not always an option due to the mothers’ health, medications, etc. But I agree that those that can should be encouraged to do so.
I can't imagine the trauma that these women are going through.
Here’s a wacky idea: Why don’t mothers just use the formula that God created to feed their babies?
I thought women came equipped with the means to feed their babies??
Haven’t they rebuilt the “Baby Milk Factory” yet???
