The Tsars actually had more success with pan-Slavism since they were helping the Bulgarians, for example, to throw the Turks out. But the Soviet occupation and time have erased just about all of that gratitude. The Poles on the other hand have detested the Russians as murderous boors since the 18th century.

I’ve travelled a bit. America does lead the world. Even in places that oppose the USA, its influence looms large

That’s not “expansion” as your putinist propaganda posits.

Each of those countries petitioned, and in the case of the Baltics begged, to join NATO before being accepted if they followed certain conditions

Jonoreston, the EC existed in 57.

You ever heard of the EC?

Your map, like your logic, is utterly wrong

Not smart to make gay jabs at the Ukrainians considering the documented Russian propensity to rape other men in the military.

“Russian soldiers are forced into gay prostitution. According to an international gay guide Spartacus, you can either pick up a soldier in Moscow city center or visit a nearby military base and choose the one you like for 100-500 usd. That’s how officers & деды are hustling

Typical story: Conscript Ilya was forced into prostitution on his second month of service. He got a letter from his gf and didn’t give it to sergeant to read. Angry sergeant told Ilya won’t need girls anymore. That evening he was gang raped. Later, they would sell him to clients.”

...

“Everyone fears glorious Russian army. And yet, Russian organized crime considers it as prey. Thieves literally visit military bases with nuclear rockets, Syrian war veterans and racketeer them. Officers and men pay of course. Thief is higher than a soldier in dominance hierarchy.”

https://threadreaderapp.com/thread/1505922839785861120.html

It’s called “dedovshchina”, and apparently all new conscripts face it at some level, with being gang-raped or murdered being at the worst end of the spectrum. They have a very high suicide rate.

“The Tsars actually had more success with pan-Slavism...”

Yes; and that’s a major reason why Russia entered WWI: it’s ties with Serbia.

One of the primary causes of WWI was that the rules of the great power rivalry in the Balkans were not clear. The Russian ambassador to Belgrade effectively gave the Serb nationalist factions a blank cheque to do as they pleased, without the ambassador informing St. Petersburg. The French ambassador in St. Petersburg was doing the same with the Russians, and the British foreign secretary had promised the French a British declaration of war should war with Germany come without informing the rest of the British government.

So a handful of diplomats set the stage for the conflagration without their own governments fully understanding what was going on.

Our own failure to reconcile our rhetoric (NATO open to all post-Soviet states) with the reality of our commitment is also a similar ambiguity here. The Germans are also to blame for following their own narrow self-interest at the expense of their EU and NATO allies in Eastern Europe (especially Poland), as well as the US and Ukraine. The SDP decided to continue its Ostpolitik with Russia despite repeated warnings that Germany's dependence on Russian gas would turn into a big problem because Putin was paying them off and German business liked the cheap gas.

“One of the primary causes of WWI was that the rules of the great power rivalry in the Balkans were not clear.”

Well, they were very clear to Austria-Hungary. They were unsure of how Russia was going to respond to developments following the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, so it — behind the scenes — sought and received from Germany assurances that if Russia declared war, Germany would have Austria-Hungary’s back, even if eventually France and Britain joined the party. With those assurances, Austria-Hungary issued Serbia an impossible ultimatum, and the game was on.

Such stupidity, on so many heads! I have long said that WWI was one of the greatest tragedies in the history of the world: It was so, so, so unnecessary.

More private agreements. Not sure the Russians would have jumped in if they knew war with Germany would immediately follow, although they were pretty cocky and did do well against Austria-Hungary until the Germans made a serious commitment.

I’ve read several books on the subject over the years, and the impression I got was that Russia had its suspicions about Germany becoming involved, but there was also some belief that Kaiser Wilhelm had assured his cousin, Tsar Nicolaus, that Germany was taking a neutral stand. Talk about “palace intrigue!”

In the hastily thrown together last minute idea department let’s stoke hatred for the West. The same West that brought economic expansion, McDonald’s, Chanel, iphones and Netflix to Russia. Brilliant.
