"1883" actor Sam Elliott apologized Sunday for comments he made about Jane Campion's acclaimed Western film "The Power of the Dog," saying at a promotional event that he "wasn't very articulate about it."
"I said some things that hurt people and I feel terrible about that," Elliott said in part at a Deadline panel event about the Paramount+ drama series "1883."
In an interview on Marc Maron's podcast "WTF" that aired last month, Elliott blasted Campion's film, calling it a "piece of s---" and decrying what he characterized as "allusions to homosexuality throughout the f------ movie."
He also questioned what a filmmaker from New Zealand would know about the American West, saying that the decision to shoot the film in that country "rubbed me the wrong way."
"The Power of the Dog" stars Benedict Cumberbatch as a closeted rancher in 1920s Montana. The film led the pack of contenders for the 94th Academy Awards, with 12 nods. Campion won the best director Oscar, making her only the third woman to earn that prize.
Elliott on Sunday publicly apologized to Campion, Cumberbatch and the gay community.
“I want to apologize to the cast of ‘The Power of the Dog,’ brilliant actors all, and in particular Benedict Cumberbatch,” Elliott said. “I can only say that I’m sorry and I am. I am.”

Big mistake to apologize for being right 🤪
He’s in trouble now.
Had to have done something right...
I didn’t pay to watch it, but I watched it and it’s a weird movie. Wish I had my 90 minutes back.
He doesn’t have to worry about starring in 1883 anymore.
He didn't want Big HomoGlobo to freeze his bank accounts and cancel him.
Buh-bye, Sammie.
Has he apologized for endorsing Bandon yet?
A guy that personified cool ends his career as a wimpering dog.
Old, and rich, and talented, and respected, and famous.
But still living in fear that somebody important won’t like him.
Kind of pathetic.
How does one take back calling something a piece of s—-? Lol
I hate pro forma apologies.
Ahem, hey Sam, ever hear of Sergio Leone ? An Italian, He was known to have created some legendary Westerns, so there is that.
;>)
You said it in a nutshell. Sad. Well, I liked the image of him, and he isn’t the first interesting portrayal of American values to turn out to be no more than a gutless pussy.
“Custer was a pussy.” No, he wasn’t, but you, Sam Elliott, sure are.
Biggest surprise is that Cummerbund is married with children, even though he seems to thrive on gay roles.
After calling something a piece of s-—, he could claim that was actually a complement since fertilizer is going to be a hot commodity over the next few years.
1883 is epic and Taylor Sheridan’s writing is magic. The way Elsa Dutton narrates the entire season made me wish that it would never end. Combine that with beautiful scenery and the storylines that ensue on a trip up the Oregon Trail with heroic and mythical cowboys that will create a world you’ve only dreamed of seeing.
I’ve been obsessed with reading about the Oregon Trail, westward expansion, pioneers every since seeing it.
Oh BTW, I saw Power of the Dog as well. It was entertaining but nothing great. I certainly appreciated the way the antagonist was dealt with... That was the best thing about it.
