Toyota dealers likely did well with the gouging.

After all, who would want most any of the domestic garbage in the early 80’s?

Think I was thrashing a POS Audi into the ground, before buying a quite nice Honda Prelude.

Audi wants 15k over sticker. They can rot.

“12 quotes that were above sticker price” because of the demand. People want cars a lot, especially gas powered vehicles.

They are ok with car dealers ripping customers off with high interest rates or raising the interest rate each year of the agreement that they slip in or overcharging for a security system or protective coating etc. but do not overcharge... yeah right.

Consumers should have the right to buy on line and not through dealerships.

It's worse.

Many dealers are refusing to honor the Family & Friends Discounts, aka A, & X plans. This is kinda old news, not properitary immic but word of this was disdain from the likes of Farley was being discussed here in S.E. Michigan weeks ago....

Gee Ford are you going to help dealers when there is a very low demand for cars and they have to sell them at a loss? I’ve never seen those checks from Ford!

Cavender Ford in Columbus, TX has been doing that relentlessly and without repentance.

Farley noted that around 10% of the roughly 3,000 dealerships in Ford’s U.S. network are charging above the sticker price

CLEARLY all 10% of those Ford Dealerships are within 50 miles of where I live then, because every one of them that I've been to has a "market adjustment" on every single new vehicle on their lot (that I looked at) boosting prices to well above sticker. In many cases, $5k above sticker.

It's called supply and demand, and it happens whenever there's a shortage of a high demand product.

Can't blame the dealers for taking advantage of it, and IMO the only reason Farley's pissed right now is because Ford itself isn't getting a cut of it.

Great picture.

There's an overhead photo of a race track in Kentucky that has some 10,000+ Ford F-150's waiting for a computer chip so they can be sent off to be sold.

The lease on my 2019 Jeep Compass is up this month. I was going to get the same 2022 model but it was going to cost me an additional $150 per month so I said no way.

Instead I extended my current lease for another six months hoping the lack of inventory will improve and the costs come down.

As a side note, I checked out the website of a local Subaru dealer and they only had 4 high end Outbacks and 1 Forrester in stock.

Let me guess, Ford and GM are telling dealerships in RED States to stop charging higher prices because they can because their customers are rolling in money and will buy the vehicles at a higher price, while BLUE states probably can’t give away their trucks if they wanted to because of a lack of economic prosperity. If I’m a betting man I would bet in the long run the commie government will use this situation to pour money into BLUE states under the guise of Build Back Better bull crap. And the commie government will twist the arms of the big 3 to move production of vehicles and parts out of RED states to the BLUE states, like Obama did.

It isn’t just auto dealers that are out of stock, try to find a new Kawasaki Mule 610 at any price.

They are one of the most popular UTVs in America and there is no stock anywhere.

People are trying to sell old used ones for more than the price of new.

The price of outboard Moters is through the roof. Same for boats.

POTUS moron has the economy screwed up so bad it will take a decade to adjust.

Hosing on some while other models can’t be sold?

Dealers have to stay in business

Part of the problem is that sales people were, possibly still are, working remotely. Answering sales inquiries on their cells away from the dealership.

I had a salesman at one dealership, who was obviously taking the call at home (I heard kids in the backround) quote me 9 grand over the sticker price for the car I was inquiring about.

I suspect the employee wouldn’t have had the brass to do that from the sales floor.

Note to car salespeople: I hope you realize that, if manufacturers get their way, your days are numbered. Customers will order their cars online in the future, no haggling, possibly arrange for financing at the dealership with a finance guy/gal, but salespeople won’t be needed.

My advice: become an auto tech.

That’s odd - a dealership forcing a cash buyer to finance. The dealer will be able to keep the reserves paid to them by the funding bank after the loan is paid off in 6 months. You’d think the banks would frown on that practice.

Ah, but if manufacturers get their way, dealerships won’t need salespeople.

Just finance folks and auto techs.

The dealers need to make chips in house...yeah sure they are specialized to each car but eproms at their heart are agnostic and can be programmed to what ever the vendor wants...even repurposed for other vehicles. It is stupid for car makers to rely on one or two overseas companies beyond their control.

One dealer guy told me that Taiwan had the “purest water supply” for the making of chips but covid shut the factories down.....BS. The purest water supplies I’ve seen are laboratories using distillation filters to supply water for their processes. Water, particulate free and deionized is easy to make though expensive in quantity but not prohibitively so. I hope the factories have learned their lessons. Just in time manufacturing needs to be tweaked!

By “dealers”, I really meant the car manufacturers should be making their own chips. They certainly have enough bucks to build their own chip facilities.

Obviously the “dealers” can’t do this.

Sorry about the mis-edits.

Tesla has no dealers and sells direct

For the existing car business, that is scary.

They see loss of sales and no effective way to prevent it

Regarding finance guys. They may not be actually required for many customers. A look at a credit score is all that is needed and online paperwork and then direct payment from the bank accomplishes it all on line.
