The California city of Santa Monica is offering housing to black families that owned homes in the path of Interstate 10 and other urban renewal projects built in the 1950s.
Beginning in January, those former residents and their descendants will receive “priority access to apartments with below-market rents in the hopes that they’ll come back to the coastal city in Los Angeles County.”
Nichelle Monroe, who said in a Sacramento Bee article that her grandparents were forced out of the Pico neighborhood, said she doesn’t think the program goes far enough. She wants help buying a home of her choice.
“But what else is there?” Monroe said. “The theft is still there. The generational wealth is still gone.”
The Bee reported on the history of “racist harms related to housing and property” in California infrastructure projects:
Santa Monica’s act of civic penance is an attempt to recognize the harm done to largely black communities during the post-World War II era of freeway building and urban renewal, the [Los Angeles] Times said. The program is part of a nationwide movement to compensate residents for racist harms related to housing and property. In September, California Gov. Gavin Newsom signed a law that authorized the return of shorefront land known as Bruce’s Beach to the descendants of a black couple who were run out of Manhattan Beach nearly a century ago.
Affordable housing will also be available for families removed when they city bulldozed another Black area, Belmar Triangle, to build the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium. Children and grandchildren of those who were displaced will be eligible. Some 600 families lost their homes when Interstate 10 was built through the Pico neighborhood, according to the Los Angeles Times.
The city program initially will be open to 100 displaced families or their descendants...

How about giving Whitey free Walgreen’s merchandise for unprosecuted theft of products?
The city program initially will be open to 100 displaced families or their descendants... and their descendants descendants.....infinite
When does this lunacy end
Double dipping!!
Whites should be compensated for having to move out of neighborhoods when racial crime was brought in
Whites should be compensated lowered values for blockbusting
Same for schools. Run out by crime
Same for businesses strip malls and shopping malls
Same for post 1964 reverse discrimination
So no cracker families were displaced in the building on Interstate 10?
Two simple questions. Were the owners of the homes that were destroyed to build 10 compensated at the time for condemnation of their homes to build the highway? 10 is quite a long stretch in California. Were the homes of white folks along that stretch to build 10 not also condemned? And a follow up third question. Will their successors also be compensated?
However,I'm *not* talking about that SCOTUS decision that said that government can take your home to make way for a shopping mall. That's much different than schools and hospitals.
It won’t end; they’ve become the new “American Indians” with welfare for life with no work requirement.
Many cities are simply urban reservations with bipedal livestock, hastening their demise...
What’s being done for people who were screwed by the Kelo decision?
What about other property taken by eminent domain? Is it just for blacks? How does that work?
Eminent Domain happens all over the US. And I-10 displaced all races and people along it’s path. So why is Santa Monica being racist and only compensating Blacks and not Asians, Mexicans and Caucasians?
After about 30 years of lawsuits, the I202 extension in Phoenix got the green light. It was build in 2 years!
People, who got their houses razed were actually very happy, as the gov. paid above market prices. That seems to be the case all the time, US gov. tends to recompense well for taking.
Upset were the people who were not razed, but their house, instead in quiet neighborhood, ended next to busy freeway. No compensation.
All the PROPERTY OWNERS affected by the construction of I-10 were compensated, period. This nonsense about renters, squatters, or whatever is just that - nonsense.
My husband’s family lost a chunk of the front yard to road widening in the early 1960’s. We bought the house from his dad. I think we should be compensated too. Where do we sign up? </s>
So black land owners weren’t compensated when their property was taken for freeways?
“families removed when they city bulldozed another Black area, Belmar Triangle, to build the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium. ... Some 600 families lost their homes when Interstate 10 was built through the Pico neighborhood”
If these families indeed owned property that was taken by eminent domain, I am very skeptical that they were not compensated for the then current values of the properties.
In other words, another scam perpetrated on the taxpayers.
One day whites are going to look around and wonder what happened but by then it will be too late.
A few years ago, we were driving north on Milwaukee Avenue and my wife saw the street sign for Austin Avenue. "Is that the same Austin right by your parents' house?" yes, and then I had to go through the entire explanation about the convenience interstates getting built and how it wasn't just farmers who sold land and buildings to the government.
Key phrase - black FAMILIES that owned homes. Were they given zero dollars and just run off the place? I doubt it but they make it sound that way. Maybe if they stayed together as families now, they'd be doing better. "She wants help buying a home of her choice. ". Maybe if she had a he, they'd be doing better.
