A music video poking fun at officers sparked a country-wide search within the Royal Canadian Navy for the culprit who made the parody as well as threats to sailors that even watching the spoof would result in punishment.
The video emerged on YouTube in February 2020 after news reports that the second-in-command of HMCS Calgary was relieved of his duties after disabling the smoke and heat detectors in the warship’s wardroom so he could smoke. The disabling of those safety systems took place less than two weeks after a fire broke out in the engine room of HMCS Calgary, causing minor injuries among crew members.
The parody video called Smoking in the Wardroom — a takeoff on the rock hit Smokin’ in the Boy’s Room — sent navy leaders into a tizzy, according to documents obtained by this newspaper.
“This is unacceptable and brings discredit to the CAF and RCN,” noted the message from Chief Petty Officer 1st Class David Steeves and sent to chief petty officers across the country. Steeves, who as command chief petty officer provides advice to the navy leadership on discipline and professional development, wrote that “we must investigate and see if we can identify the member.”
Vice-Admiral Art McDonald, then navy commander, and other navy leaders also called for an investigation. A navy team tried to track the social media footprint associated with the posting of the video on Facebook and YouTube in an attempt to determine who made the parody, according to the documents obtained using the Access to Information law.
Messages were sent to the crews of various warships not to comment or share the video and noted those who did could be punished. Some sailors were told that even watching the video could be seen as an illegal act.

Really, woman? Really? That video would have gotten ripped even faster. Ready aye ready!
They would have been better served by simply STFU. Now they have ensured that the parody is watched worldwide.
Oh, and BTW, Canadian Navy, it isn’t the video that made you look like fools. It was your officer who disabled the safety devices.
Yep, never heard of the video or the controversy, and now I can’t wait to see it.
The Streisand Effect is a phenomenon that occurs when an attempt to hide, remove, or censor information has the unintended consequence of increasing awareness of that information, often via the Internet.
It is named after American entertainer Barbra Streisand, whose attempt to suppress the California Coastal Records Project photograph of her residence in Malibu, California, taken to document California coastal erosion, inadvertently drew greater attention to it in 2003.

Is there a video link?
Free speech is dead in Canada. Anyone speaking out against the State will be hunted down and prosecuted!

Let the pogroms begin
Canada has a navy?
thx... i’ve tried three sites that say they have it but none of them will load.
The Village People did something similar several years ago.
“second-in-command of HMCS Calgary was relieved of his duties after disabling the smoke and heat detectors in the warship’s wardroom so he could smoke.”
Back in ‘94 I was on a supply ship (USS Seatle AOE3) in the Teddy Roosevelt battlegroup. The Captain of the ship had banned smoking and the sale of cigarettes onboard. The ship had signaled (via light) they wanted us to send 2 cartons of cigs for the Admiral who was embarked at the time!
It was sickening!!
Video appears to have been pulled from YouTube and anywhere else it might have popped up.
