Will Britain Shiver? This winter, the U.K.’s wrongheaded energy policy may test public devotion to environmentalism.

Britain this winter might perform an interesting if discomfiting experiment to find out how deep is its people’s practical commitment to the environment. My guess is that it is not terribly deep.

There is much talk of a coming energy crisis if the winter is severe. A possibility exists that the lights will go out, factories will close, and hot water and central heating will be lacking. A population unused to such hardships may express its discontent by means not wholly peaceful or constitutional.

Of course, the crisis might not come: the weather might be clement, and the country might escape the worst consequences of its governing class’s customary improvidence and incompetence, in this case with regard to energy policy. But that policy, a combination of cheese-paring, corruption, and politically motivated appeasement of the green lobby, may yet result in catastrophe—economic, social, and political.

Britain generates more than a third of its electricity with natural gas but has only three days’ storage of such gas. The government closed down its major storage facility to save money, relying on just-in-time supply from the Netherlands and other countries with huge storage facilities. But gas remains in short supply, and its price has risen dramatically; in the event of real penury, which Vladimir Putin will be in no mood to ease, countries that normally supply Britain will, quite rightly, supply themselves first, leaving the British to freeze. No one in the British government apparently thought of strategy, as opposed to mere tactics.

Not long ago, as its contribution to saving the planet, the Scottish government promised not to develop further fossil-fuel reserves in the North Sea. Coal, the most polluting form of electricity generation, has been phased out completely (in 2012, it still accounted for 25 percent of power generation)

Coming to a country near you, if the Democrats get their way. And if you think the GOP is a sorry excuse for a conservative party, look at the UK "conservatives".

The political class and their donors don’t mind if energy prices skyrocket, or if energy supply is tight. It won’t affect them. The important thing is to keep the commoners from messing up their planet.

Communism brings misery to the people every time it’s tried. The “climate change” band are nothing but a bunch of communists dressed up as eco-warriors.

There. Fixed it.

The irony of the Scots burning old books and encyclopedias to keep warm was lost on the policy makers at the EU and London. Here in the US the Democrats are banning the burning of wood. People will freeze and die this winter.

Gasoline or petrol as they say over there, must be about 8 bucks a gallon now. As you all know, they sell by the liter. So abt 2 dollars a liter is....

And the GBP is compared to the USD..

You all do the math.

“Coal, the most polluting form of electricity generation”

This is not true. Coal generation is better for the environment than wind.

I hate to see people suffer, but maybe freezing will bring them to their senses.

When “follow the science” meets reality; many rubes will be harmed. For far too many people it is easier to not think and just obey.

Crying shame. I’ll burn wood and shoot guns until they pry a gun out of 1 hand, and a log out of the other.

I think global warming is a communist plot, to destroy the western economies. After all, wasn’t it the former head of world communism, who started Green Cross? I think it’s a radical environmental group. Am I wrong? 😀😁

The climate change It makes absolutely no sense....because...it's picking a particular point in time to suit it's intention.

Climate change is a natural phenomenon.

Right now, leftist politicians are quietly huddling to come up with slogans and talking points to be distributed through corporate media, to shift blame and to convince people they need to sacrifice even more, even faster, to achieve their environmental fantasies.

Just keep the ice chipped off your solar panels and you’ll be fine.

First they make you miserable, then they pretend to find a solution. The solution always involves you losing more of your money/freedom/mind.

Remember the recent gas crisis in the UK?

More than shiver … I expect that potentially thousands of elderly in the UK will die from the effects of hypothermia. Mother Gaea demands human sacrifices
