Rice is not stupid, she is very intelligent and from my experience very nice. But that experience was limited. She is highly respected and she is a conservative. But, she is a denizen of the swamp. Because she is held in such high regard, she is brought out in situations like this. In this case to disperse the blame as you correctly surmised.
For someone once held in such high regard by conservatives, prostituting herself in this way takes her from the level of a Thomas Sowell intellectual to parity with piss boy Colin Powell. Sadly, this should have been beneath her and she should of held off commenting, it diminishes her as an intellectual conservative. I suspect she will be on TV this weekend prostituting herself for her former boss, further protecting her fellow swamp denizens. But, it is too late, conservatives have left her boss in the dustbin of history and never want to see another Bush in a national office. She is in danger of being relegated to the same dustbin of irrelevance.
