Ford May Pay U.S. $1.3 Billion Fine For Importing Transit As Passenger Van From Turkey

The U.S. Supreme Court has declined to hear an appeal asked for by Ford regarding import duties on some Ford Transit Connect vans. The decision could cost Ford up to $1.3 billion in penalties.

The vans were built in Turkey and imported into the U.S. The problem, though, is that Ford declared that they were passenger vans. That meant that the company only had to pay 2.5% import duty on the vehicles, rather than the 25% duty levied against cargo vehicles as part of what is commonly referred to as the “chicken tax.”

* snip *

It [the Justice Department] alleges that the Ford fitted the vans with “a temporary, cheap rear seat that was designed to be immediately removed as soon as the van cleared” customs.

Ford is already in a bit of financial trouble. This obviously won’t help.

Here’s YouTube’s premier car mechanic Scotty Kilmer talking about this issue. Scotty knows his stuff. Beyond that, he’s just fun to listen to.

“Ford May Pay U.S. $1.3 Billion Fine For Importing Transit As Passenger Van From Turkey..”

The US...world’s greatest extortionist. It’ll just be built into the price of new Ford products.

I like Ford. My next vehicle will be a Ford small sized SUV.

They should have been honest.
I hope it won’t hurt them too much.

nothing new - subaru brat seats in back of pu
http://www.thepetrolstop.com/2014/12/subaru-brat-rear-seats.html

Subaru Brat rear jumpseats
The USA and Canada’s version also had carpeting and welded-in rear-facing jumpseats in the cargo area. These were a tariff-avoidance ploy,[3][4][5] with the plastic seats in the cargo bed allowing Subaru to classify the BRAT as a passenger car - charged only a 2.5%, compared to 25% tariff on light trucks due to Chicken tax. They were discontinued after the 1986 model year.

Me too. I can’t wait for the new Ford Maverick to come out. It’s supposed to hit the showrooms this fall.

The Maverick shares its basic engineering with the Ford Escape, Bronco Sport and Lincoln Corsair compact SUVs. It'll be built alongside the Bronco Sport in Hermosillo, Mexico.

No thanks. I buy only American made vehicles.

Ford was supposed to release the Crown Victoria as well. I wanted to get a look at it in real life, not newspaper mockups. However, I haven’t seen it.

It may be cancelled because cops have all fine SUV.

“Union rank and file are MAGA all the way.”

LOL! Sure.

Unions are a big part of why I’ll never buy an American Company made car again. That and the horrible quality control.
