wardaddy:
"Andrew Jackson was an insane nut case?
Let’s get u on record" Ha! Well... you might get an argument for that from SC Senator John C. Calhoun, plus a good many Lost Causers on FR CW threads have expressed their dislike of President Jackson... you know.. that whole "hang the secessionists" deal?
"...please give my compliments to my friends in your State and say to them, that if a single drop of blood shall be shed there in opposition to the laws of the United States, I will hang the first man I can lay my hand on engaged in such treasonable conduct, upon the first tree I can reach.[65]"
"John Calhoun, if you secede from my nation I will secede your head from the rest of your body."
And President Jackson also
paid off the national debt, the only president in US history to do so.
So Jackson was my kind of Democrat, and we could add to the list others like Jefferson, Madison & Monroe -- all staunch nationalists and all pretty good conservatives.
But not quite
as conservative as they pretended, and for proof of that, you need only look up Virginia Congressman/Senator John Randolph and his
tertium quids -- the
Old Republicans.
They were the true conservatives to Jefferson-Madison-Monroe's Democrat pretenses.
Of course, on the other hand -- if you consider Jackson's duels, the bullet he took, the man (men?) he killed dueling... certainly by today's standards, "nut case" is not too strong a term, is it?
As for "insane"... well, there was always a method in his "madness".
So I like Andrew Jackson for the same reasons I like Donald Trump: he put America & Americans first.
