Several prominent leaders who maintained warm relations with US President Donald Trump have yet to wish US president-elect congratulations.
As many world leaders rushed to send President-elect Joe Biden congratulations on his projected US election victory over Donald Trump, others were notable in their silence on Sunday.
Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said he would not congratulate Biden on his victory until all legal challenges are resolved.
Lopez Obrador said during a press conference he would refrain until all legal issues [related to the election] are resolved. We dont want to be reckless.
The Mexican president added that his country had a good relationship with both Biden and President Trump, as he praised the sitting leader for being very respectful of us.
While outspoken disappointment was scarce, several prominent leaders who have maintained warm relations with Trumps administration also kept silent on Bidens win. That included President Jair Bolsonaro of Brazil and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman of Saudi Arabia.
Also noticeably absent from well-wishing were Russias Vladimir Putin and China Xi Jinping.
True to the confrontational style he and Trump share, Bolsonaro also clashed with Biden during the presidential race.
When Biden said during his first debate with Trump that the US needed to push Brazil to better protect the Amazon rainforest, Bolsonaro called the statement disastrous.
What a shame, Mr John Biden! he said, mistaking the former vice presidents first name in the English version of his tweet.
Brazils leading media outlets reported Trumps defeat in the context of its own populist leader, who has similarly sought to diminish democratic institutions and reject science-based facts.
Trumps defeat punishes the attacks against civilisation, it is a lesson for Bolsonaro, wrote Folha de Sao Paulo, one of Brazils main daily newspapers.
May Brazils leaders seize the spirit of the times or die, like Trump, who has already left it too late.
Other leaders who supported Trump including Israels Benjamin Netanyahu, Indias Narendra Modi and President Rodrigo Duterte of the Philippines congratulated Biden, indicating they rejected Trumps claim that the election was not over.
The legal challenges aside and the seemingly Herculean task of rolling the boulder up Mt McKinley due to the massive media calling the election before it should be ...
...the media has done a huge disservice to our country by its intentional failure to report a new, significant (actually quite refreshing) approach US foreign policy with big benefits to the US and its allies. Biden’s comments at the 2nd debate about North Korea appear to be a return to the confrontational approach as well as kowtowing to China .... these are very troubling. He would also be very weak on Russia.
Also, get ready to crank up the war machine again.
I’d rather have Obrador or Bolsonaro as President than Romney or members of the incompetent warmonger Bush family.
Very disappointed - but not surprised - that the Japanese prime minister as sent Biden congrats aong with all the usual bullsheet talk about strengthining relations , etc...BTW - I live in Japan . Media 99% against Trump .
How soon, if this coup is complete, will we be in another foreign conflict? I do not see young men rushing to defend the Progressive States of America.
This was inevitable. Politicians want some random foreign war in order to pound the drums of patriotism.
Joe Biden has a mandate from his most loyal constituents who are crying for “More brains!”
No..just for the money
We must see how the electoral college votes.
I’m sure the leaders of China and Russia will remark soon, as soon as they can detach themselves from the conga line.
Anybody heard from FauxPrancis in the Vatican yet?
Before Biden can sign onto a foreign war, there’ll be a law requiring community service. So we can clean up nasty things in the cities, like the Jefferson Memorial, and nasty things on the landscape, like Mt. Rushmore.
Many world leaders took a minute to acknowledge Trump, too.
The 13th Amendment will shoot that down.
And what about the Jewish Prime Minister Trump did so much for them and he repays by congratulating Biden lol
Then they'll clean up that nasty 13th Amendment. We're talking about Democrats!
That shouldn’t surprise you.
But World War II apparentlyrics unified us at home.
