Trump faces unusual barrier to COVID aid: GOP allies

President Trump's last-ditch effort to secure another enormous package of emergency coronavirus relief is being threatened by an unusual group: his GOP allies in Congress.

For almost four years, Republican leaders have rallied behind the president on issues as varied as health care, immigration, trade and defense, even when his positions bucked long-held conservative doctrines.

Yet just weeks before the Nov. 3 election, as the embattled president is exhorting Congress to move a major package of COVID-19 aid, those same lawmakers have emerged as the single greatest barrier standing in his way.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) has repeatedly thrown cold water on the idea of spending trillions more dollars to fight the pandemic, citing the opposition of roughly 20 Republicans in the upper chamber warning of the long-term effects on the federal debt.

On a conference call Saturday, Senate Republicans relayed those concerns to party leaders and top Trump officials, trumpeting their objections to a $1.8 trillion package proposed by the White House a day earlier and ensuring that the only path to passage is on the shoulders of Democratic votes — a strategy McConnell has rejected virtually out of hand.

I actually think - for ONCE - the Senate Republicans are doing a good job at holding the line on spending.

Really?

This stimulus is all politics. I'm okay with Trump calling for it and GOP members of Congress stopping it. It's a win-win.

The government does not spend money efficiently and any bill will be laden with pork. We are better off with nothing if they have given in enough to get sufficient Democrat votes to pass it.

If the goal is to get checks to somebody before election day then the checks are not needed.

For the first two years with both houses under GOP control, the only thing they aided Trump with was tax cuts.

This one time, they are right.
We’ve spent enough money we don’t have.

Correct.
We need another massive trillion dollar package like a hole in the head.

Every time they say “trillion” it means another $3,000 from every man, woman, and child in the country.

I agree but is this the new standard or are they only doing it to oppose Trump?

They want to pass a small targeted bill. I am for that, if it has to be done at all.

Americans are HURTING. This is the one time to accept the spending, for Americans. This isn’t a repeating cost.

Friggin’ lame excuse not to cooperate with the President.

Trump understands Mexican standoffs where everyone gets what he wants. He pretended DACA was being held up for years, when he did *nothing* about it. He didn’t want to do anything about it. I understand. DACA is one of those things he feels passionately about. He’s for it; we’re against it. I’m OK with that. Jeb would have established a big annual quota for DACA.

In the case of the stimulus, something similar is happening. He’s positioning himself for it; the Dems are doing the same; and the GOP pols in Congress want to their voters to know they’re not letting deficits go into the stratosphere. Everyone gets to position himself the way he wants to voters, even though no stimulus package has been forthcoming. That’s the meaning of Trump backing off from his statement that he’s breaking off talks because Pelosi is being unreasonable. Let her break off talks this time.

Re Presidential vs Senatorial genius - if this were a business contest, there’s no doubt - Trump would win hands down. Politics-wise, I’d put money on Senators who have survived decades of elections.

I’m thinking it’s a smart move to offer it and let Nancy and the Dems trash it instead of the Repubs doing it.
Handle it right and it increases the chances of a second term and keeping Biden/Harris out, holding and maybe increasing seats in the senate and possibly taking the House back.

He who lives on pure principles, against an enemy that has no principles, dies by those principles....no matter what the movie may have said...

Mr. President, if your administration would haul the governors of CA and NY into court over their illegal lockdowns and got them lifted, then Congress passed a bill protecting all biz from WuFlu liability...

WE WOULDN’T NEED ANOTHER STINKING BAILOUT.

AAAAARGH.
