Trump says his Supreme Court nominee will be a woman that he names next week

President Donald Trump said Saturday evening that he will choose a candidate to fill the late Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg's Supreme Court seat next week and his candidate will be a woman.

"I will be putting forth a nominee next week. It will be a woman," Trump said during a rally in Fayetteville, North Carolina.

Trump told rallygoers that Ginsburg's "landmark rulings, fierce devotion to justice and her courageous battle against cancer inspire all Americans," offering prayers to the justice's family.

The President also noted her friendship with the late Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia, saying it's "a powerful reminder we can disagree on fundamental issues, while treating each other with decency, dignity and respect."

He also discussed how he has the power to fill her vacant seat.

"So, Article 2 of the Constitution says that the President shall nominate justices of the Supreme Court. I don't think it can be any more clear, can it?" Trump asked, prompting chants of "Fill that seat!" from the rally crowd.

The President told reporters earlier Saturday there about 45 people on his list, but he does have a "short list" for potential nominees.

A source told CNN that Trump specifically has said he would "love to pick" federal appeals Judge Amy Coney Barrett, who is a favorite among religious conservatives, but doubts he'll secure support from the US Senate. Barrett is among Trump's list of 20 potential conservative nominees he released earlier this month in an attempt to galvanize his base.

What are the most important issues for you?

Who will the woman be?

hopefully she will either be a hardcore 2A proponent or a loss leader to a hardcore 2A proponent.

ACB is a blank slate on 2A so no loss if she is not on the short list.

I just had a funny (and stupid thought). He could nominate Hillary, and in the vetting bring to light all the evidence against her.

Amy Barrett. Plus side is she’s already been through a confirmation hearing.

Very cool idea ... unless the RINO Senators actually confirmed it!

I know President Trump has to be nice and civil and pay tribute to her.

But after all the lies, deceit and insults flung by liberals I'm sick of them. The woman was a hard-core liberal ruling against conservatives in case after case; in my eyes she was an evil witch and deserves no nice words. The libs certainly won't play nice when they talk about Trump's choice to replace the witch.

I want someone smart who isn’t apt to legislate from the bench. I hope whoever she is, she isn’t an ideologue. If this election is decided by the high court, you are going to need a good solid judge who has great respect for the constitution and the law in order to hand down a decision that the country will hold together for. The Left is going to riot, its just where we are.

Amy Coney Barrett will not get a vote. She’s too controversial and divisive for R senators this close to the election. They need a more under the radar candidate who is also strongly conservative but not one the liberals can easily brand as a radical. Trump has the base already. He needs moderate and independent women who want a feel good story and narrative.

That is the first generation Cuban American Barbara Lagoa. She’s conservative and from Florida specially the Miami area that Trump needs pumped up margins from the Cuban Community to make up from Puerto Rican (democrat) population growth in the Orlando area.

Also, watch the democrats try and tear a hispanic woman apart. It will backfire BIGLY.

ACB is a Devout Catholic and would be a sure vote against Roe v. Wade. But, because of her devout Catholicism, she is controversial with the two Mormons, Lee and Romney who have both spoken out against her in the past. Strongly.
So, because of the need for a quick confirmation and two Senators likely to abstain (Collins and Murkowski), Lee and Mittens votes are needed so, ACB is out.

I wonder if the left ever ponders just how many potential future democrats they have aborted away since 1973. That’s a whole lot of “what the hell were we thinking” secret epiphany subject that should keep them up at night. And no one forced them into it. They did it willingly

2nd amendment is important.

A culture warrior is guaranteed to lose Trump support, it could cost him the election, and potentially destroy the country. You aren’t going to save any babies if you cannot even save the country.

HA!
it would indeed (almost) be worth it for PDJT to nominate HilLIARy as a means of exposing all her perfidy and lies

but she’s history anyway, so I hope PDJT will select the very best person for the job (someone who will respect our Constitution and Bill of Rights for a change) and that Sen. OConnell gets the confirmation done this week.
we can’t let the D’s delay this one because the D’s are threatening over and over again to try to steal the election. we need a full court ready to repair the D damage

What if, let's just say, he nominated Biden?

Biden leaves the campaign trail and Harris becomes the nominee...except that votes of his get tossed in states where his name has been printed on the mail-in ballots and the law and calendar don't provide for a replacement.

Dementia Biden gets pulled into the preparations and then - wait for it - questioning for DAYS ON END.

Then, after the states' deadline for changing the candidate has passed, Trump announces he's pulling the nomination due to Joe's poor showing, and puts up Mrs Barrett.
