Over 10 months, she sent $200,000 to the man she believed was her army captain in the ill-fated attempt to move the diamonds. To gather the money, she had borrowed from family, friends, and her ex-husband. That must have been quite the story, $200K to ship some diamonds.
If I remember right a Captain can ship just about anything for free (household goods).
And without all that much in the way of inspections. All a captain would need to do is hide the diamonds until he was rotated back to the states.
I realize of course a Japanese woman is not likely to be aware of this nor is your average person.
