One of the scams highlighted by U.S. prosecutors detailed the story of a Japanese woman who believed she was corresponding with a U.S. army captain stationed in Syria.
The two had been digital pen pals before the relationship turned romantic and the man claimed he had discovered a bag of diamonds in Syria. He wanted the womans help to smuggle the diamonds out and soon began requesting money to help with the effort in the elaborate ruse.
The woman, known in documents as FK, also believed she was corresponding with an acquaintance of her online love who was a Red Cross diplomat. The diplomat was planning to help get the diamonds shipped to her.
Over 10 months, she sent $200,000 to the man she believed was her army captain in the ill-fated attempt to move the diamonds. To gather the money, she had borrowed from family, friends, and her ex-husband.

Wow, in Japan its very taboo to marry outside the race and doubly taboo to get involved with American servicemen. It must have been quite the ruse.
She borrowed money from her ex-husband? Ouch.
That must have been quite the story, $200K to ship some diamonds.
If I remember right a Captain can ship just about anything for free (household goods).
And without all that much in the way of inspections. All a captain would need to do is hide the diamonds until he was rotated back to the states.
I realize of course a Japanese woman is not likely to be aware of this nor is your average person.
It might be taboo, but they can’t stop it. There tons of Asian dating sites that cater to American men. After the age of 30, women are called “leftovers” and are passed by the Asian men.
Really?
Tell them to send resumes to me at "Ben's hovel - USA -zipcode"
Headshots and full length pics required -- no photoshops.
These scams have been a pet peeve of mine for many years.
A great many people have been hurt by the evil scammers.
I’ll take two!
It's a paradox, you'd think that since China aborts girls, there won't be a large database of women seeking men. But it exists.
“Wow, in Japan its very taboo to marry outside the race and doubly taboo to get involved with American servicemen.”
Not true at all. I’ve been stationing in Japan on and off for over 2 decades. The truth is the opposite.
I will be the first to admit that I’ve been taken for a hundred or two hundre a few times in my life with the idea of bigger money to be made.
unless you count woman that I fell hard for, for reasons that I can’t put here.
Then I’ve been taken for many thousands in fine restaurants, vacations and jewelry.
Qnd for what? Many of nights of seemingly endless Bliss?
Well...
The guy with the $200,000 will move to the US, run for mayor of Gary Indiana, and win.
If I sent anything, can I get a refund?
Asking for the next door neighbor...
Yes, it is great. I don’t feel sorry for this particular woman, as she was participating in something she thought was illegal.
But I become really incensed when I learn of old people losing their life savings in scams. A senior in a town about 8 minutes from my house wound up losing $10K to a scammer posing as her grandson who was in trouble.
There are a fair number of seniors here: seniors come here to retire, while young people leave the area, as there is not much work for them. It seems like we were targeted for this scam. I received 2 separate calls about a year apart from men each claiming to be my grandson in a jam.
I only online date Ukranian and Russian women...I think.
There are indeed several born every minute,
Fair number of officers at least in the Army appeared to me to be Eurasian. I know the MG commending the 101st AB when it first went to Iraq was. His father was an AF MSGT mother Japanese.
NO different that the old Sears and Roebucks. I ordered from them three times and all they sent were the swimsuits.
Somehow I know that joke is as old as your name but it’s new to me and I got a good old belly laugh. Thanks!
