‘’Old Yeller’’ is a film I can no longer watch: sad but with promise for tomorrow. Glad was I able to see it in childhood. Dorothy McGuire, Fess Parker, and Kevin Corcoran have all passed on.

I saw the movie in the theater in 1958--its showings sold out and I was lucky to get a seat. I also read the book, as well as Fred Gipson's two other dog books set in Texas, Hound Dog Man (New York: Harper, 1947) and Savage Sam (New York: Harper, 1962). My favorite was Hound Dog Man followed by Savage Sam, both of which would be banned today--Hound Dog Man because the protagonist is a black dog with a name that starts with "N" and Savage Sam for its realistic portrayal of how Indians treated white captives that fell into their hands.
