One by one, they passed through the grand Capitol Rotunda to pay respects to the civil rights icon.
It was a solemn display of unity as congressional leaders from both sides of the aisle offered praise for longtime Georgia Rep. John Lewis. There was House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who called Lewis the conscience of the Congress; and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, who praised him as a model of courage. Vice President Mike Pence and former Vice President Joe Biden, the presumptive Democratic nominee, came as well.
But missing was a man whose absence spoke volumes: President Donald Trump.
No, I wont be going, Trump told reporters when asked whether he planned to pay his respects to Lewis, the first Black lawmaker to lie in state in the Rotunda. Lewis body was later moved to the steps on the Capitols east side for a public viewing.
Trumps absence was another break in convention for a president who has broken so many norms, and one that underscored his separation from much of Washington society, along with his dismal relationship with Democrats on Capitol Hill especially members of color.
Trump had long harbored resentments toward Lewis.
A spokeswoman for Lewis, who died of pancreatic cancer, brushed off any talk of politics when asked whether the Lewis family had any communication with the White House about whether Trump should attend, calling it irrelevant.
I would say that this is not a political event, said Brenda Jones, the congressmans longtime spokeswoman. Its our time to pay respect to a man who did a great deal for this country. And thats all we want it to be.
The White House did not respond to questions about why the president did not attend.

Lewis did good For the world in the sixties. He was a political hack for the past two decades. Skipped every republican inauguration out of hatred. He was not a hero or even a decent person.
Lewis was scum.
It is a no win situation for Trump...Lewis parlayed his civil rights activities into just another typical race baiter living large on the oppression of his fellow blacks ....typical demonrat...
I skipped it too. (No one noticed)
Trump was just re-claiming his time!
Paid my respects in the porcelain room.
Cancel Culture’s Curious Passes! (like with AP!)
“Doublethink means the power of holding two contradictory beliefs in one’s mind simultaneously and accepting both of them.” - George Orwell, 1984
(CU News) - The originally peaceful BLM protest voices have morphed and now extended into Europe with the heavy influx of groups similar to Antifa. In Europe, we continue to see the same inconsistency with regards to the removal of historical figures and stories. Its an interesting dynamic thats clearly been overtaken by a political movement lurking in the background. If the protests were indeed about equality and civil rights, would these corporations be exempt knowing their exclusive relationships with the NAZI Party or ongoing corruptible behaviors?
Is this writing intended to promote protests? No. The exclusion isn’t unintentional or merely an oversight by the protesters. With that being understood, we are left with no worries on that half of the table. Let’s take a look at some of the companies with worrisome histories of poor choices related to social justice.
The first example is one of the most guarded abuses of trust in modern times..
AP News Agency
AP provides much of the basic, on-the-ground-reporting and images for a large portion of the news that you now read and watch. They were also NAZI collaborators.
Most international news organizations withdrew from Germany during the NAZI years, but the AP remained and fired all their local Jewish staff along the way. As early as the mid 1930s, AP began refusing to publish images depicting the discrimination against Jews in Germany.
The AP knowingly sold images of Jews from inside Germany and around the world to be used in anti-semitic propaganda. They were also the leading supplier of images for a propaganda book called The Jews in the USA, and in third place among suppliers of photos for the anti-semitic book The Subhuman.
The AP also sold images from Germany to the rest of the world. These images could only leave the country after being inspected by senior SS members. As a result, the AP was publishing images that showed NAZI members as heroic leaders and Jews as subhuman cowards.
This collaboration with the German government was unprecedented for a foreign news press service and contributed to NAZI propaganda both within and outside of Germany.

Veep drew the short straw.
John Lewis Surrendered to the KKK when MLK jr was killed, he then spent his whole life trying to keep the Black Population on the Demonrat Plantation and secure their future by being enslaved in DEPENDENCE!!!
There’s an old saying: “Nothing but good about the dead.”
For all of DJT’s presidency Lewis was prejudiced, vindictive and hateful towards him. Since there was no good, Trump chose nothing. To do otherwise would just be hypocritical, and Trump is not a hypocrite.
Just look at the way the demonrats treated McCain in life vs death. It’s enough to turn your stomach.
I suspect you are exactly right. The @$$press had to be satisfied with this mild hit piece rather than a major "How Dare He?" hit piece.
It was clear Trump would not have been welcomed there by Lewis’ family or associates.
Only a complete a-hole would crash a funeral where he’s not welcome and ruin it for the family.
We have seen Democrat politicians do so in the past however.
Lewis breezily compared McCain to George Wallace for political points. Now look at these GOP cowards kneel before for his corpse. They don’t call the GOP the Surrender Party for nothing.
He croaked 12 days ago - how much formaldehyde did they use to pickle the old fool?
Facts are racist.
It’s almost impossible for video to capture an event that never happened.
Times 10!
Then the Left complains when Trump accommodates their request.
Lewis will be another air fart in history by next week. May he Rest In Peace with Margaret Sanger.
Are you still expected to kiss their ring even after they’re dead? /s
