NEW YORK (AP) The U.S. Roman Catholic Church used a special and unprecedented exemption from federal rules to amass at least $1.4 billion in taxpayer-backed coronavirus aid, with many millions going to dioceses that have paid huge settlements or sought bankruptcy protection because of clergy sexual abuse cover-ups.
The churchs haul may have reached -- or even exceeded -- $3.5 billion, making a global religious institution with more than a billion followers among the biggest winners in the U.S. governments pandemic relief efforts, an Associated Press analysis of federal data released this week found.
Houses of worship and faith-based organizations that promote religious beliefs arent usually eligible for money from the U.S. Small Business Administration. But as the economy plummeted and jobless rates soared, Congress let faith groups and other nonprofits tap into the Paycheck Protection Program, a $659 billion fund created to keep main street open and Americans employed.

PING
Money to be used to finance MORE illegals.
Hmm fine with me.
“Money to be used to finance MORE illegals.”
Actually, worse. Money to compensate this country for the Catholic Charities sponsorship of ‘refugees’ like the Somalian who ran the women over in Seattle. They should be accepting all costs of ‘settlement’ for their charges until they become citizens. Period. That should be the deal. Sponsoring NGOs must sustain their ‘refugee’ charges until citizenship is acquired, or they leave the country. And if their refugee charges are fined for committing crimes, they pay that as well. THAT WAY they have a stake in the success of their ‘charitable acts’.
Not just limited to the RC Church. I know of several large Protestant churches in Arecibo who also received PPP money, including one I attend.
exactly my thought too. ugh!
Time for churches, synagogues, and mosques to start paying taxes.
This cult has fooled so many people it doesnt matter what crimes they commit., people will still support the Catholic Church. They even send their children to the schools knowing they could be abused.
IF they collect one thin dime of tax dollars, they should be taxed... It is bad enough 'we the people' fund their fraudulent charities to traffic humans... pox on them. They serve the devil ... carrying around their begging purses...
There is NO way to penetrate the mindset ... they will misquote the Bible for dollars.
This is a bogus, anti-Catholic report. First of all, anyone who knows anything about the Catholic Church in the United States knows that it’s not some great monolith. It’s an extremely fragmented thing, with parishes having their own finances, religious orders doing their own thing, Jesuit high schools doing their own thing, etc. etc. ad infinitum. So, no, “the Catholic Church” didn’t get “billions” from these programs.
The other thing is, why the hell shouldn’t Catholic parishes and schools qualify for these loans/grants/whatever just like every other entity out there? Last time I checked, various Catholic entities employ hundreds of thousands of people with mouthes to feed, families to house, medical bills to pay, etc.
I would rather the Catholic Church get it than people in the news media or entertainment industry.
Why should I fund your cannabis shop? Why should I fund your strip club? If the government has all these emergency programs/plans/loans/grants, all sorts of entities are going to take advantage of them. You’ll hate some of the recipients. I’ll hate some of the recipients. Some other guy wlll hate a completely different set of recipients. Thems the breaks.
You are NOT funding my shop....never been in one or a strip club... how about your Supreme John Roberts abortion shops. Or trafficking in humans all for a buck.. spread your own Catholic wealth and stop charging we the people for your fund raisers...
Never!
Do you have actual proof for such a statement?
