U.S. Supreme Court deals setback to Keystone oil pipeline project

Canadian company blocked from getting key permit to continue building

BILLINGS, Mont. — The U.S. Supreme Court has handed another setback to the Keystone XL pipeline from Canada by keeping in place a lower court ruling that blocked a key permit for the project.

Canadian company TC Energy needs the permit to continue building the long-disputed pipeline from Canada across U.S. rivers and streams. Without it, the project that has been heavily promoted by President Donald Trump faces more delays just as work on it had finally begun this year following years of courtroom battles.

Monday’s order also put on hold a earlier court ruling out of Montana as it pertains to other oil and gas pipelines across the nation.

That’s a sliver of good news for an industry that just suffered two other blows — Sunday’s cancellation of the $8 billion Atlantic Coast gas pipeline in the Southeast and on Monday a ruling that shut down the Dakota Access oil pipeline in North Dakota.

In the Keystone case, an April ruling from U.S. District Judge Brian Morris in Montana had threatened to delay not just Keystone but more than 70 pipeline projects across the U.S., and add as much as $2 billion in costs, according to industry representatives.

Morris agreed with environmentalists who contended a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers program was allowing companies to skirt responsibility for damage done to water bodies.

But the Trump administration and industry attorneys had argued the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers permit program, in place since the 1970s, was functioning properly when it was cancelled by Morris over concerns about endangered species being harmed during pipeline construction.

Perhaps it is time to require each state to achieve complete energy independence across all sectors. Or what the heck: each county. Since energy is too dirty to produce or move, let New York City figure out how to power itself with unicorn farts.

"judge" Brian Morris is an ObammyCommie put in place to impede projects like this.

Morris goose-steps in lockstep with the Greenies.

and let your hick state learn how to give more to the federal government than it takes.

if it’s not too much effort you can look it up and see that 9 out of the top 10 states that GET more than they GIVE are redneck states.

A little less pickup driving and moonshine making and a little more business to generation $$ is in order :)

Morris is on the Blue team, appointed by Obama...

But, don’t try to explain that to the Chief, John Roberts...

BTW, SCOTUS should never use that term, “Chief”, again...

Myself and other non-Native Americans are personally offended!

This little Resistance creep Morris apparently gave himself jurisdiction over the entire oil and natural gas industry in the United States...

That little jerk Morris has got quite the Blue Team Resistance record.

He abuses jurisdiction like Gropin Joe Biden abuses a fifteen-year-old girl.

So I look around and do a bit of comparison...

How many trains have we seen derailed over the past 10 years, most of them dumping thousands of gallons, if not barrels, of oil all over hell and a half acre.

So how many pipeline spills in the same 10 years, and how many thousands of barrels of oil lost?

No contest, pipeline is safer, no doubt...but the morons want all pipelines stopped, it doesn’t fit their political narrative.

I’ll take liberalism is a disease for $800 Alex...

The world is awash in oil.

We have time to get these pipelines in place

The South has the largest percentage of blacks per state in the country. Most are on welfare.

Those states match up with the “redneck” ones you put down.

This is actually a fight between people like Buffet and others who own pipelines or train lines now. New pipelines change the way oil moves from where its drilled to where its refined or stored. An old refinery or a train line can remain profitable simply because their is no competing pipeline. In order to stop the new pipeline from being built, someone tells the Indians they should get paid before allowing oil to flow under their feet. Then the old infrastructure keeps its profits for another ten years while the courts fight.

“and let your hick state learn how to give more to the federal government than it takes.”

States don’t pay federal taxes. Individuals are forced to pay federal taxes they do not give them.

Your argument is flawed.

Its time for a POTUS to tell the courts - You do not make federal policy from the court bench. Objections have to go through the democratically elected representatives and the democratically elected federal officials. If their is environmental questions that might require environmental adjustments and or mitigation, they will be addressed and adjusted for or mitigated as each case needs. You, the court, cannot pretend to predict so called “bad” events that have not happened. Your roles as predictors of bad events before they happen is over.
