Native tribal leaders are calling for the removal of Mount Rushmore

The chairman of the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe is calling for the removal of the Mount Rushmore National Memorial, arguing that it is carved in an area that is considered sacred land to Natives.

"Nothing stands as a greater reminder to the Great Sioux Nation of a country that cannot keep a promise of treaty then the faces carved into our sacred land on what the United States calls Mount Rushmore," said Harold Frazier, chairman of the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe in South Dakota, where the memorial is located.

"The United States of America wishes for all of us to be citizens and a family of their republic yet when they get bored of looking at those faces we are left looking at our molesters," Frazier wrote in a statement on June 29.

Frazier is just the latest in a slew of Native leaders who have spoken out the monument, which features the faces of four former presidents: George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln.

In June, Oglala Sioux President Julian Bear Runner said Mt. Rushmore is a "great sign of disrespect," noting he believes it should be "removed."

Don’t they do this every year or so?

Their area is “sacred.”

Of course, every other corner lot is “sacred” according to them. That is why they treat their reservations with such fondness.

Add Reagan and Trump. Take Teddy’s place if there is not enough room.

I believe that is a federal monument on federal land. It’s the Crazy Horse monument that is on private land if I remember correctly. Monuments on Federal Land are protected for now. Want in one hand and defecate in the other and see which gets filled first.

Yes, you never hear of any land which Indians claim which is not “sacred”.

Harold Frazier can go screw himself. Enough is enough - the Floyd killing has turned into an excuse for a radical left-wing orgy.

Would rather see the removal of native tribal leaders.

It’s long past time for them to stop being First Peoples and start being un-hyphenated Americans.

I’m surprised they haven’t used the old “Sacred Indian Burial Ground” excuse as they usually do to get anything shut down.

Have they forgotten the travesty of the mountain carving right down the street of Crazy Horse? Isn't that a "sacred" mountain too?

It’s time we invite the Tribes to play a Nationwide game of “Cowboys and Indians”.

Build the pipeline, but don’t send it through the Cheyenne River Reservation.

Oh yeah?

I heard you guys run roulette wheels with digitally controlled magnets and you have marked cards with layered images like they use to look through paintings to show rough sketches of the masters under them. Not to mention rigged games all over the place. /s

Close down the “Indian” casinos. Get jobs like everybody else.

P.S. I made all that up. But it’s probably true. Leave our monuments and our achievements alone. You guys were torturers and also slaughterers of entire herds of buffalos to make it easy to pick up the ones that were driven over a cliff. Some “ecology.”

I was in New Mexico a few years ago. I saw a little church in the distance. I wanted to go take some photos of it.

I asked a cop at the gas station if he could tell me how to get there.

He told me, “It has limited access...it is “sacred ground.”

I told him, “We have churches and sacred ground in the east, but we don’t lock them up.”

The cop looked around and said, “The kids go down there on Saturday night and by Sunday morning the parking lot is full of beer cans and used condoms, so they put up the fence.”

That made a lot more sense to me than the “sacred” land BS story.

Nearly all Indian tribes, with a few notable exceptions, fought on the side of the British in the Revolution.

They were the terror and shock troops of the Crown.

Nearly all Indian tribes had slaves. To include white and black slaves.

So...f-ck them.

Bullshit! /Penn Jillette

The American Indians were stone-age savages who had not yet developed the concept of “sacred.”

The rock on Mt Rushmore will not allow any more work.

However, there are many rock formations nearby that would be suitiable

We can't allow COWARDS to give away our nation and heritage to the most whiney among us!

We are allowing 2 year olds to run the family!
