Oxford University is leading in the world Covid-19 vaccine race
The Economist ^ | 07/02/2020

By oxford’s eastern bypass road, some way from the famous spires, sits an unremarkable collection of glass office buildings that includes the Jenner Institute. Described by an industry observer as “a slightly dusty corner” of the university, until six months ago it mostly busied itself with useful but ill-funded research into diseases suffered by people in poor countries. Now it has become the likeliest candidate to produce the world’s first vaccine against covid-19.

With governments all over the world pouring money into it, the effort to get a vaccine has come to resemble a more urgent version of the space race. According to a tally maintained by the Milken Institute, an American think-tank, 180 vaccines are in development. In late June China waved through an emergency authorisation to allow its armed forces to use a vaccine that remains incompletely tested. A number of American vaccines are doing well, but have yet to progress to late-stage testing. Soumya Swaminathan, chief scientist for the World Health Organisation, says the Oxford vaccine is the leading candidate.

Oxford’s vaccine is already in three late-stage trials. Only one other vaccine, developed by Sinopharm, a Chinese firm, has started a late-stage trial, and it does not have the global support and finance that Oxford’s does. AstraZeneca, a British pharmaceutical company, is building an international supply chain to make sure that the vaccine is available “widely and rapidly”.

It might be clear by the end of August whether or not the vaccine is effective. A single successful trial showing efficacy would allow a regulator to approve the vaccine for emergency use—something that would probably pave the way for use in high-risk groups. That could happen in October. The firm thinks that full approval, which would require results from multiple trials, could come early in 2021.

Leading? Gee, how would one measure that?

I have been watching all the vaccine companies of any repute — Oxford does appear to be the real deal. If efficacious, they can distribute in 2 months. Results will be in approximately 6 weeks.

The psychological effect will likely be profound and work toward reopening — I imagine there will be some stalling as something immediately before the election could likely move things in a way the masters of the universe find unacceptable.

As a critical care physician, if there is something that made it through phase III trials with validity, I would not hesitate to be inoculated. We have quietly put a Manhattan project like feel around this, and I am actually optimistic that we will have something in hand by fall.

We don’t want any cheap cures using drugs with patents that expired fifty years ago!

We want brand-new cures with brand-new patents and price tags and we want to force people to take it because otherwise we don’t get to charge them!

So only vaccine$ are acceptable.

The fact that most people are asymptomatic is irrelevant. They must be inoculated too because $$$$.

I’ve been watching all the British mysteries and Oxford is a very dangerous place. I doubt anyone will survive to complete the development. That place is worse than the Somme.

So if Oxford develops the vaccine, does that mean Fauci and Gates get shut out of the gravy train? Or will they be in the money no matter who develops the vaccine?

“has started a late-stage trial,”

When a “a Chinese firm,” is probably dubious (and the chinese military might not care how many of their men the kill already using it)

With this ones testing through into 2021 when they arent sure “whether or not the vaccine is effective” is still too much up in the air.

In reality is it all that close to having a workable vaccine, all that much closer than the many competitors ?

Big Announcements when there are actual usable results is better.

Since you, as a professional, have been follow the vaccine development;

If three leading vaccines are all acceptable, would all three be available.

Would they be different?

Would we have a choice?

Thank you for your opinion.

Actually, China already has a vaccine and is giving it to their military.

Nice try putting words into my mouth — why dont you go back and read what I said. And you little jab with the dollar sign is disgusting. If you want to be an anti-science antivaxer dufus — feel free, I am not suggesting that it is mandated, however, just because you might wish to live in the Stone Age, please dont make me join you. I love how the worst of the worst of conspiracy theorists twist someones arguments around. DID I EVER ONCE SUGGEST IN MY POST IT SHOULD BE MANDATORY?

The fact of the matter is antivaxers with their conspiracy theories are in the vast minority of people. Further the fact that you are unwilling to see that the psychological effect of developing a vaccine with any efficaciousness would likely be important in getting back to normal is denial at best.

I would get the vaccine considering the risks and benefits and understanding that I am on the front line. There is nothing wrong with that. You are disgusting in your attempt to make my words something they are not to advance your own agenda.

Knowing how the FDA and meds work, I believe that the first one will be awarded a patent. If all three are brought to market — so be it, I am all for competition. But I think the FDA will likely certify the first...

Isolating people diminishes their immune system.

Sick people should be quarantined.

Healthy people should not, unless there is another plan afoot.

Well, you take the number 1 and call it x.
Lim(x-> infinity) 1/x

First one to zero wins.

There is zero evidence isolating people does anything to their immune system. What would even be the mechanism for that? What, do Memory B cells get lonely if they can’t hear other peoples’ voices and then die? Do you have any idea how any of the human immune system actually works? T cells? Antigens? Any of this? Because what you’re describing does not make any sense whatsoever.

How many polio vaccines had the US approved in 1954?

When’s the last time you heard about anyone in the US affected by polio? Seems like that worked itself out somehow...
